What's a sale without a scandal in Pakistan?

There have been catfights and broken doors at sale events in the past, so why should the sale at the Pakistani everywoman's shopping haven — Khaadi — pass by without incident?

A photograph of an apparently tampered price-tag attached to a two-piece Khaadi suit, being sold at 50% discount went viral yesterday. The owner of the photograph, a customer named Yasir Tanveer, claimed that Khaadi is "increas[ing] the prices before giving promotion [i.e. discounts]".

"I found more than 10 different articles having double price tags, shockingly high price tags were pasted on the low price tags just to cheat innocent consumers," claimed Yasir.

The post went viral, and fast.

Soon, however, Yasir offered a clarification, following a phone call from Khaadi.

However, the clarification has since been removed, and Yasir's now sticking to his original complaint.

We speak to Yasir and Khaadi to get to the bottom of the matter.

"I went shopping to Khaadi day before yesterday," says Yasir Tanveer, referring to the first day of the Season End sale. "I noticed there and then that the outfits I picked out had double price-tags on. I asked a salesman about it and he told me the tags aren't removable, so a new, correct tag was placed on top of the other, incorrect one. He also told me to take it or leave it. I bought the items and came home."

"I was still angry about the incident, so I wrote a Facebook post about it. I didn't anticipate that it'd go so viral, not when meray ghar walay bhhi meray status nahi parhtay (my own family members don't usually read my statuses)."

But his post went viral, and Yasir got a call from Khaadi last night, explaining that the double price tags were the result of a pricing mistake.

"So I amended my post, apologising to all the people who read and shared my post for the misunderstanding. I had used harsh words for the brand, and I didn't feel any shame in having to apologise for an unintentional mistake of mine."

However, Yasir has since deleted the clarification.

"I noticed a few comments criticising my apology, my statement was getting twisted, so I removed the clarification."

And Yasir isn't totally convinced by Khaadi's explanation.

"I'm still wondering how it is that so many outfits were incorrectly tagged, and that all of the underneath tags were of lower price."

Khaadi, on the other hand, says that this was a systems' issue from their factory or retail side.

"There are two kinds of products, kurta and kurta dupatta. A kurta is [sold for] Rs 5,000, kurta dupatta for Rs 7,500. Usually when tagging is done, it's the retail side or the factory side, we're trying to figure out which end made the mistake. We sold more than 200,000 units this weekend, and it was crazy due to the sale. We have spoken to the customer and told him he bought a kurta and dupatta which is Rs7,500. We understand that we need to change the complete tag so as to not cause discomfort to the customer," said Mohammed Tahir, Head of Sales at Khaadi.

Khaadi CEO Shamoon Sultan's own two cents were: "Owing to the high number of units sold in the sale with the same staff strength as regular days, Khaadi should be some given some leeway."

So, is Khaadi duping its customers? Regular shoppers corroborate that two-piece suit actually costs Rs 7,500, and the incorrect price-tagging sounds like a plausible explanation. What the incident highlights is the need for brands to train sale staff better, to cater to customer queries even at peak season. The entire brouhaha boils down to an irate customer after a bad sales experience, that is, a totally avoidable situation.

It's the modus operandi of most sales. Businessmen do not like to be kicked where it hurts most i.e pocket. That is the reason common bisinessman does not like to pay taxes and come out on the roads when asked to. It's another matter that they expect too much from the gov without contributing anything from their kitty.

Surprised... really? I have seen this happen many times... in garment stores, supermarkets... they increase the price before putting a discount. The idea is to (probably) to attract customers without losing profits. Not only this, there are other questionable practices too (like putting a Sale banner with the words '70%') while only damaged/discarded items are discounted at 70%, the rest being given only at 20% discount.

Havig worked in retail side of fashion industry, that too outside of Pakistan, ill agree to Khaadi's clarification. This initial tagging could be a reason of wrong system entry aginst the items and resulting in incorrect prices, later after realizing he may have changed it to 7500 and now the sale price tag. This happened with me while i was working with the Japanese team outside of Pak, since we had put incorrect price in the system all items were priced the same despite diff prices, diff sizes, all were charged same by the sustem. We had to retag them (over the old tag) and then put them in the shop. And during sale On those items, we retaged them (total tags 3)

Khaadi has increased their prices at the highest levels. Their prices were very reasonable before ,everyone could easily buy their stuff but now it's out of reach.

I ordered this same outfit for which Khaadi is being accused on this post for tampering with the price. I ordered this same dress from khaadi's website two months ago on the same price which is written on the tag shown in this post i.e 7500 and keep in mind that this outfit was purchased two months ago way before the sale. So changing the prices of outfits and putting hiked up price tags etc are baseless allegations which on earlier post by the same person also posted that they addressed this issue that it was a mistake. This is just a case tagging mistake from Khaadi's staff end. As a proof I am also attaching email on the link : http://i.imgur.com/6uJUNE3.jpg

Well this is surely more if an exaggerated incident. Khaadi rocks and its sale are real sales. The explanation is very right that there are many articles who are sold 2 piece together i.e. Kurta dupata and separately as well. For obvious reasons the prices will be different. And even if it was a wrong tagging incident in a particular outlet, the new price of this article did not vary in other outlets. Unfortunately we complain more and still want to buy in the long queues.

Avg: Rs. 5,000 per suit X 200,000 suits on just one weekend of sale. That roughly Rs. 1 billion in sales. That's Huge. Tring, Trng.

we are emotional nation when it comes to our terms we don't spare a single a opportunity to disgrace others, we like to wear discounted stuff but don't like it to be mentioned as discounted stuff- when you go for economic inducements be prepared for every eventuality including no return or money back. Inferior quality and tempering

And up till now nothing. Sorry khaadi no more online shopping from me from your website :-(

@Atif It happens all over the world. I see it all the time in Australia. When I was a student in USA, I wanted to buy a branded design of a dress shirt, which I could not afford. At the sale time, I would go and check all the stores in the vicinity to buy that shirt, but this design, which was high in demand was never on sale. All other design which the proprietors could not sell were 50% to 70% off, but never the ones, which were in demand.

Frequent buyers of Khaadi know actual prices before sale. They can quickly figure out a price hike before discount.

I won't trust a customer who has changed his stance at least thrice. Seems dodgy! Having been a loyal Khaadi customer for a decade, I won't believe that they were trying to dupe customers, but anything in possible in Pakistan. I'd remind customers to be mindful of the prices before and during sale. I have moved on to better and lower priced brands offering better value for money since.

LOOT SALE means you will be looted this is normal trend in Pakistan where the normal price s jacked up and then a discount is given to you know a place called Chase in clifton where they had raised the price from 500 to 1000 and then gave 40% discount so you ended up paying more then the actual Price

Well guys please be informed that unless Khaadi does not claim that 50% is off on their previous week prices they are absolutely on the right track. Because 50% off on that day meant 50% off on the price tag labelled on that particular day. Its their choice to sell their dresses for any amount any day, does not even need to be same the next day.
