'Kolaveri Di' singer Dhanush bags role opposite Uma Thurman in Marjane Satrapi film

Dhanush was cast for "his intelligence [and] killer smile", director Satrapi said

Hold it, everybody. The prize for most enviable Hollywood debut is going to Dhanush.

The prolific Tamil actor came on everyone's radar with that earworm of a song, 'Kolaveri Di'. He has since bagged his first National Award for his performance in the Tamil drama film Aadukalam.

Dhanush is now all set to make his Hollywood debut opposite Uma Thurman in a film that is directed by Iranian-French director Marjane Satrapi (of Persepolis fame), reports Times of India.

Titled The Extraordinary Journey Of The Fakir Who Got Trapped In An Ikea Cupboard, the comedy adventure is based on Romain Puértolas’ bestselling 2014 novel of the same name.

According to Variety, Dhanush will star as Aja, a con man/conjurist who travels from India to an IKEA in Paris on a secret mission by his mother.

Aja falls in love with a woman and accidentally gets deported along with a band of African refugees to the far corners of Europe against his will.

Director Satrapi thought Dhanush was the "obvious choice" for the role: "As I was watching various Indian movies, Dhanush became the most obvious choice — his intelligence, his killer smile, his ability to enter fully into the skin of any character he played (and I can go on and on forever) made me confident that he was the one."

The film will reportedly be shot in India, France, Italy and Morocco in mid-2016.

The difference between south indian actors and Bollywood actors is that most south Indian actors do a variety of roles effortlessly while most Bollywood actors get stereotyped.

@Rashid Sultan looks alone dont an an actor make. Having said that its true the average Pakistani actor looks better than the average Indian actor. So tell me Rashidbhai what went wrong with "your" actors that they are nowhere near international recognition in the same way as "our" actors??

@Madhusudan Coz no one on this side of the border is really interested. What caught my eye that brought me to this article was Uma Thurman. You Indians surely know how to flatter your inflated egos.

Dont get it. Many here dont understand that actual looks dont matter in movies. Its how portray themselves in camera is what matters. Good looking actors can try modelling instead. Its various emotions which a person draws are what make an actor good.

@RashidSultan: This is the problem with movie industry and also its audience in this region....to mistake looks for acting....there are so many "ordinary" looking people whose stories are never told...and they do live a life that our so called great cinema ignores for the same racists reasons.

@obivankanobi Looks do not matter in Hollywood. It's how well you can carry your craft. It's only in a stupid culture like India where Miss Worlds and Miss Universes end up as actresses. Tell me one American beauty queen who has become a successful actress?

I don't get the fuss about looks. I personally feel he is good looking in his own way. Let's not confuse beauty with fair skin. Unfortunately in India (maybe south asia as a whole, i don't know) fair = good looking. Anyways he's a great actor to boot, if you have seen Raanjhana and his Tamil films, you would know what i am talking about. Congrats Dhanush!

@Rashid Sultan We have talented actors . Both Good looking and not so good Looking. Focus should be on acting and and not on good looks. SRK is perfect example. I think here story is different.
