We take a trip down memory lane in which we look at 5 roles that made us believe in King Khan's acting chops
02 Nov, 2015

Shah Rukh Khan is the quintessential boy-next-door. From Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, we know he's got the rom-com Prince Charming role down.

However, he's so much more diverse than that.

As King Khan turns 50 today. the leading man took to Twitter to unveil the second trailer for his upcoming movie, Fan, a role that shows how diverse he is as an actor.

In the upcoming flick, Khan will be playing a dual role in the movie; one of a reigning superstar and the other of his biggest fan and as luck would have it, a lookalike. The second teaser gives audiences a glimpse of the die-hard fan Gaurav, who is obsessed with Aryan Khanna, the superstar.

We take a trip down memory lane with five other characters that prove that SRK can basically do justice to any genre and role:

1) Don 1 & 2

Stepping into Amitabh Bachchan's shoes for a remake is no easy task but Khan did justice to the iconic role with his effortless and haunting performance of an underworld kingpin.

2) Devdas

Another remake that is a feather in his cap, Devdas is the tragic story of forbidden love that could give Romeo and Juliet a run for its money. Khan's portrayal of rich boy turned alcoholic Devdas is heart-wrenching and has made the movie a cult classic.

3) My Name Is Khan

Not only was My Name Is Khan special for reuniting SRK with his screen lady love Kajol after nearly a decade but also for the unique plot.

At the heart of it, it is a love story but Khan's portrayal of Rizvan Khan, a man suffering from Asperger's Syndrome who is accused of being a terrorist, evokes empathy and makes the audience root for him throughout.

4) Chak De India

The 50-year-old superstar played the role of an inspiring and endearing coach of a women's hockey team in Chak De India, which went on to become a monster hit.

5) Swades

Khan as Mohan in Swades is raw and honest; it's a performance worthy of being lauded. In fact, SRK's character in this movie is a lot like him in real life -- in the beginning, he is a U.S based somewhat ignorant Indian man until circumstances force him to return to his motherland and come face to face with the issues that plague the nation.

His metamorphosis happens right before our eyes and it's the same with Khan; he can do your masala Chennai Express and Kabhi Khush Kabhi Ghum flicks but he also has the talent to take on the meaningful roles with emotional depth.

It has been a pleasure to watch him evolve on screen. Here's hoping SRK celebrates 50 more birthdays!
