Celebrities pray for victims of Ghotki train collision, call for accountability

At least 55 people were killed and nearly 100 others injured after two passenger trains collided near Ghotki's Daharki on Monday. People across Pakistan, including celebrities, have taken to social media to express solidarity with the victims and call on the government for those responsible to be punished.

The accident took place around 3:30am after a Millat Express train — headed from Karachi to Sargodha — derailed and collided with a Sir Syed Express train coming from Rawalpindi near the Raiti railway station.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Imran Khan launched an inquiry into railway safety faultlines.

Soon after news of the tragedy broke, celebrities took to social media to condemn the incident, send their thoughts and prayers to the families of the deceased and hope for the speedy recovery of those injured. Some also demanded that the people responsible be held accountable.

Former Pakistan cricket team coach and captain Waqar Younis said a prayer for the deceased.

Faysal Qureshi wanted those not doing their jobs to be taught a lesson for their incompetence.

Adnan Siddiqui was shocked like the rest of us.

Mahira Khan pleaded for an investigation and accountability.

Mehwish Hayat said we owe it to the victims' loved ones.

Hania Aamir prayed for the injured.

As did Kubra Khan.

Humayun Saeed is expecting swift action.

It is important for our celebrities to raise their voices at times like this and make sure the government hears them. Public outcry is a powerful tool and we hope the government will pay heed to the voices calling for a swift inquiry and justice for the victims and their families.
