Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o will star in a film together, thanks to their Twitter fans

Twitter isn't just for starting fights.

At this year's Cannes festival, singer Rihanna and actor Lupita Nyong'o have officially signed on to star in a movie together — the groundwork for the said movie was actually laid by their fans on Twitter!

Let's backtrack: Rihanna and Nyong'o were fellow front-rowers at a Miu Miu fashion show in 2014 and this photograph of them went viral:

"Rihanna looks like she scams rich white men and Lupita is the computer smart best friend that helps plan the scans," a Twitter user said about the photo. Her comment was then cheered by a lot of users.

Fans of the two urged them to work together on this storyline. They soon responded to the requests.

At Cannes, Netflix nabbed the untitled Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o project after a dramatic negotiation. Rae's representatives have said the original Twitter users who imagined the concept for this film would be credited and included in some form.

According to sources, the film will start production next year.
