Following repeated incidents of assault, Bakhtawar calls for banning single men from public spaces

Following repeated incidents of assault, Bakhtawar calls for banning single men from public spaces

Says men should not be allowed out without being escorted by women, "perhaps then they will think twice before assaulting women".
23 Aug, 2021

Incidents of violence targetting women are not 'isolated' in Pakistan as many blindly argue but the last one month has been particularly distressing with multiple stories coming to the fore.

Reacting to one such story shared by journalist Sabin Agha on Twitter, Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari called for banning single men from public spaces.

"Another harrowing experience – witnessed by police who refused to help despite their ability to call for back up as well as use weapons to disperse crowd. Trusted to help and instead complicit," she wrote.

"Men should be banned from public spaces. We need more women to safeguard women," she added.

On Monday, she reiterated her demand and said she stands by banning men from public.

"Single men should not be allowed out without being escorted by sisters, mothers, wives or daughters – perhaps then they will think twice before assaulting women," tweeted the daughter of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and former president Asif Ali Zardari. "With repeated and increasing incidents of assault, no better option."

The calls for making Pakistan safe for women have been growing louder – and angrier – as the cases of violence keep coming to light.

Read: IG Punjab takes notice of second female harassment incident in Lahore on Independence Day

In the recent Aug 14 incident where a female TikToker was assaulted by hundreds of men at the Minar-i-Pakistan in Lahore, a number of arrests have been made, with the government vowing that more suspects will be taken into custody. One hopes the perpetrators are meted out the exemplary punishment they deserve and as a nation, we will do away with the ugly pattern of victim-blaming.

Until then, until the time the country's people realise that Independence Day – and all other public holidays and public spaces – are as much for the women of Pakistan as for the men, strong measures will need to be put into place so that women don't have to keep looking over their shoulder.

Banning singles to public spaces would be an insurmountable task given their civil rights but how we can make that safe and acceptable is the segregation of parks speratly for families and single individuals in the different parts of the metropolis. In addition, the help of the religious preachers is always needed to impart the lessons of dignity of the womenfolk, their undeniable rights, their standing and their place in our religious values to the beasts in the guise of humans. Electronic media should also play it's constructive role to disseminate the message of equality of gender in ordinary circumstances and their superiority in terms of their services for the world of humanity in addition to highlight the incidents of brutality, brazenness and immodesty within the framework of law of the land and religion.

TOday we are in the state of shock because of these incidents. We want swift action. However to ensure such incidents do not happen, we need to take a long term approach where we educate our young men about respecting others' space, especially females. Banning them from public places will only isolate them further. First thing that all federal and provincial governments should do is to provide the youth space to play. We have no playgrounds. Where should the young spend their energies?

@SAB, NO. Education does not help. Murderer of Noor Muqaddam was highly educated. It is the upbringing and fear of law that does the job. While of course, governments cannot influence upbringings by parents, what can surely be done is to create the fear of law. Severe punishments are the only solution. But you know what, all desi hypocrites liberals are also crying against harsh punishments in the name of human rights (like victim had no rights). You will see, this case also like many other will not see an end. There will be a team of lawyers also who will leave no stone unturned to prove that no man misbehaved with the girl. And then dates after dates after date. Meanwhile, judges are busy in self proclaimed suo motu's and fake political cases of govt. and opposition alike.. Welcome to democracy.

Infringing the right of movement is not a way to prevent misbehaving women. There are alot of public places where harassment of women can takes place. Good idea by Bhakhtawr. It's the only solution for this situation. If IK is not going to take some discision about it now them I'm telling the time is not for when the whole struggle or development made by women in society is going to be wasted as even the noble famelies won't let their go out to study and work due these beast roaming everywhere in open.
