'Why are girls always blamed for divorce?' Pop star Annie hits back at haters

"I had to speak up not just for myself but for all the girls out there who have been divorced," said the singer
10 Oct, 2016

Pop star Annie Khalid gave haters on Instagram some well-deserved verbal thrashing for shaming her for her second marriage.

The 'Mahiya' singer had uploaded photos of her wedding with husband Saad Ahmed Khan last week in celebration of their one-year wedding anniversary.

According to the singer's latest post, some of her followers "abused [her] for [her] second marriage" with comments like "how many times you gonna get married", "kitni dafa shadi karo gi", "maneater", "vulgar woman" and "wahiyaat aurat".

So I'm writing this post with tears in my eyes because I am sick and tired of the abuse I get on social media for my second marriage. YES I married AGAIN! Why do people write " how many times you gonna get married" "kitni dafa shadi karo gi" "maneater" "vulgar woman" "wahiyaat aurat" What sin have I committed? Our religion permits us to marry again after being divorced, our beautiful Hazrat Khadijah was married 3 times, her third marriage was to Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Who is better than her? Who is better than Our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH? NOBODY. What bullshit Pakistani culture we have where divorcee women are scandalised and stigmatised in our society. They become "black sheep" or "damaged goods". At the time of the Sahaba, men would stand in line to marry divorced women because they knew of the immense reward it was in the eyes of God. But in our day & age we are instead ostracised and looked down upon. You men who comment under my posts have some shame, nobody wants their marriage to break, but if it does then what can you do? Would you be happier to see me alone and unhappy? Would that make you happy? What hurts the most is seeing women say horrible things too. I would expect girls to be more empathetic and understanding but how SAD that you also hurt me with your brutal comments. Remember, this could happen to your mother or your sister, this could even happen to YOU. I am sorry for this long post but I had to speak up not just for myself but for all the girls out there who have been divorced. Can I also add how I always read that it must have been My FAULT, something bad I must have done got me divorced. Why is the girl always blamed, WHY? Thank you to my husband Saad who married me knowing my past and not once brought it up or used it against me. Instead loves me unconditionally for who I am and not what I am. Ok I feel better now. Peace

Saying that she's speaking up for "all the girls out there who have been divorced," Annie wrote a long post on Instagram that first gave her abusers some religious context:

"Our religion permits us to marry again after being divorced, our beautiful Hazrat Khadijah was married 3 times, her third marriage was to Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Who is better than her? Who is better than Our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH? NOBODY."

"At the time of the Sahaba, men would stand in line to marry divorced women because they knew of the immense reward it was in the eyes of God. But in our day & age we are instead ostracised and looked down upon."

She also called out her abusers for lacking in humanity:

"Nobody wants their marriage to break, but if it does then what can you do? Would you be happier to see me alone and unhappy? Would that make you happy? What hurts the most is seeing women say horrible things too. I would expect girls to be more empathetic and understanding but how SAD that you also hurt me with your brutal comments."

Glad you spoke up, Annie!

We , as a nation, cant see others happy. Period. Annie, they (including women) want you to spend your life alone in misery, because it makes them feel good that they are not going thru what you are going thru.

I don't know who she is and I don't think that second marriage tags someone as bad. But reading her arguments reminds me of Samuel Johnson who once said, "Patriotism is the best refuge of the scoundrel."

this shows our cruel mindset towards divorced women. this is all because we are not aware of our own beautiful religion Islam.

All twitter or facebook trolls should be ashamed of themselves for slandering people about their personal lives. However, celebrities should also show discretion regarding personal posts or should be thick skinned about negative comments because haters will unfortunately will keep hating.

The society is finally changing and inexorably moving towards liberalism and individual freedom! Glad you spoke up, divorce though painful should be considered a right of both parties. It just means that two people cannot continue in what is actually a very close and deep relationship. It does not mean that either party is somehow 'bad', it just means that both parties are human! All power to you Annie and best of luck in your life ahead.

Dont worry Annie, be proud and walk tall. You have not done anything wrong. Losers always disturb other successful people. Women are worst. Instead of supporting they pull others down. Your fans, including this one, wish you a very happy, pleasant and loving married life. Have fun!

@huma yousaf Girls are not supposed to sacrifice their happiness. Marriage should work for both and both have to sacrifice to make it work. Annie is right, our religion does not put undue burden on females. Its the culture that does. Things need to change.

Annie, you are an awesome singer, you are a pride for Pakistan. Your personal life is yours. The world is made up of all types, the good, the bad, the ugly, the ignorant. Ignore the haters, as they are irrelevant losers. It is because of these bad ones, you come to appreciate the good ones
