Going Loco for Local: Dalouk’s Onion & Olive Hair Oil is food for your hair

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to hair products. But when your hair is falling like crazy and you don’t know what to do or what you’re doing wrong, anything and everything goes, except, sulfate-heavy shampoos — don’t fall for that trap!

Something that everyone’s trying these days is onion oil. It’d be wrong to say the recipe is the haircare industry’s best-kept secret. This ayurvedic hair potion can be made at home or purchased off the rack from your nearest drug store.

Known for promoting hair growth, it’s fit for all hair types and is readily available on the internet with all haircare brands jumping on the trend.

So, when Images received a package of Dalouk’s Onion & Olive Hair Oil, I was keen on giving it a shot. I used the oil for two weeks — twice a week — before writing this review because it’s a hair oil, not a magic serum.

The instructions on the packaging were clear — apply it two hours before washing your hair and make sure you massage it well so the oil is evenly distributed. I try to focus on the roots and ends of my hair because that’s where it needs to work its magic.

The consistency of the product is thick so a little goes a long way. The onion stench is perhaps my least favourite part of the process but without it, there’s no way to find out the oil is authentic. So I gladly and patiently sat through the two hours I had to keep it on.

It was easy enough to wash it off. You can shampoo twice if your hair is really greasy — mine always is because it’s so hot. But I could make do with my regular shampoo application.

The product also arrived with an anti-hair fall shampoo so I also gave that a shot. Unfortunately, I developed dandruff during this process so I stuck to using the oil without experimenting any further.

The oil left my hair feeling soft and smooth. After a week, I noticed my hair fall had reduced and after two weeks, I could spot patches of baby hair growing. There’s no way to confirm whether this growth is natural or because of a change in my haircare routine but I would like to believe it’s the latter.

As a person who struggles with hair loss and hair growth, I feel the product is doing its work but the only way to know for sure is to use it consistently — since my hair does feel silkier. You can also always make onion oil at home with tips from YouTube but since the product is priced at Rs1500, there’s no harm in trying it out!

I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars.
