X-Men star James McAvoy reveals he secretly married girlfriend Lisa Liberati

Scottish actor James McAvoy has surprised his fans and everyone else with his revelation that he and American girlfriend Lisa Liberati are married.

Forty-two-year-old McAvoy — who starred in Atonement (2007), Wanted (2008) and the X-Men franchise — confirmed his marriage in an interview to The Guardian published on February 3. While talking about his stage play Cyrano de Bergerac which opened in London on Thursday, the actor dished out details about his hush-hush marriage.

According to the publication, McAvoy met Liberati on the set of M Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split in 2016. Liberati was Shyamalan’s personal assistant at the time.

The two began their relationship a few years after they met and recently got married. His wife hails from Philadelphia, USA — a city where McAvoy now spends a lot of time. “Yeah, it’s like a second home for me,” he said, but didn't share much else.

According to CNN, the actor was formerly married to Shameless co-star Anne-Marrie Duff. The estranged couple, who have an 11-year-old son together, announced their divorce in 2016, after 10 years of marriage. "It is with tremendous sadness that we have come to the decision to divorce," they told USA Today at the time. "We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son."

After McAvoy's divorce, him and Liberati made their romantic relationship public by sharing a number of pictures of themselves together at a costume party on Instagram, reported CNN.
