Aquaman's Jason Momoa joins the cast of Fast and Furious 10 as a villain

Aquaman star Jason Momoa has joined the cast of street racing franchise Fast and the Furious. The actor will be seen acting opposite Dominic Toretto played by Vin Diesel.

The Fast team made official announcement on both Twitter and Instagram and wrote, "The Fast Fam keeps getting bigger. Welcome, Jason Momoa," with the hashtag #F10.

The film, tentatively titled F10, is being directed by Justin Lin, and stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang and Charlize Theron as the villainous Cipher. The movie is due for a theatrical release next year on May 19.

Lin has directed the third, sixth and ninth instalments of the franchise, the latest of which hit cinemas last summer. According to Variety, the movie made $726 million globally despite a delayed release due to Covid-19. The upcoming film will be the next-to-last film for Toretto and his crew and will pick up from where the story left in the previous film. The 11th film will be the final for the Fast originals who have been a part of the crew since 2001.

Momoa isn't the first big name that the franchise has introduced as an addition to the already star-studded cast. Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock), Jason Statham, Luke Evans, Kurt Russell and Helen Mirren are some of the big names that have made appearances throughout the films. John Cena was the latest to be seen in the franchise as Dom and Mia's (Jordana Brewster) brother Jakob Toretto who stayed distant from his siblings.

Momoa's costar from superhero film Justice League, Gal Gadot, was also a part of the Fast franchise for three instalments beginning in 2009.

The news of the latest addition came right after Johnson declined Diesel's invite to reprise his role as Lucas Hobbs after the two had a public dispute. In an interview with CNN, Johnson had said,"This past June, when Vin and I actually connected not over social media, I told him directly — and privately — that I would not be returning to the franchise."

However, Johnson said he wishes the best for the cast and that he will "always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful."
