What is Wordle and why is everyone talking about it?

The term Wordle might've crossed your path recently, especially if you're an avid Twitter user. Our feeds are sprinkled with colourful building blocks, forming a square shape. Users are posting their scores that may appear like coded language for those unaware of the game but we're here to decode the mystery.

Wordle is a guessing game in which you guess a five-letter word. The same word is guessed by players across the world and a new game is uploaded every day. The game has successfully reeled in a lot of players, including our very own Malala.

The rules of the game are fairly simple, you get a total of six tries to guess the five-letter word of the day and every time you input the letters in a row, the boxes will light up green or grey or yellow, indicating what letter you got right.

Green indicates that the letter is in the word of the day and in this very spot. Yellow indicates that the letter is in the word of the day but in a different box and grey indicates that the letter is not in the word of the day.

This builds up a square filled with stacked rows. You can get one row if you guess the word on the first try — which is quite rare but this user did it and was just as surprised as the rest of us.

Malala got one on the second try.

The game is quite addictive but you have to wait the entire day to do it. The added feature of being able to share the results on social media to compare and show off your smarts makes it more fun. In a Reddit post, the creator Josh Wardle said he wanted Wordle to feel like a croissant, a "delightful snack" that is enjoyed occasionally. This is why there's only one puzzle per day. "Enjoyed too often," he explained, "and they lose their charm."

The hype has a large number of people feeling like this.

Which is why we're to transform your confusion into clarity, maybe even push you to join in the fun. This user did a breakdown of the guesses.

Honestly, we're surprised. Seems like Wordle may be the best kept secret in the world.

All apps must be feeling this way.

The obsession is real!

Accurate.

Apparently there's an Urdu version too?!
