Kareena Kapoor says she believes in equality but is not a 'feminist' and we're confused

Everyone's been gearing up for Veere Di Wedding after a totally NSFW trailer and everything the lead actors have been saying about the movie, specifically promoting it as NOT a chick flick.

Sonam Kapoor has been very vocal about not calling the film a chick flick just because the leads are female. She also identifies as a feminist who believes in a woman's right to choose how to live her life.

Kareena Kapoor has also made a lot of similar points. She slammed the media at numerous occasions for assuming her career was over after she became a mother. She has also spoken out about body shaming, mom-shaming and equal rights for women.

Which is why it was rather surprising that Kareena Kapoor would pull the 'I'm not a feminist but I want equality,' move at the music launch for Veere di Wedding.

Indian Express reports that when asked what feminism meant to her and if she identified with the concept, Kareena said, "I believe in equality. I won’t say I am a feminist,” adding, "I would say I am a woman. Above all, I am a human being. But I would say I am as much proud to be known as Saif Ali Khan’s wife as I am to be Kareena Kapoor."

While it was odd for the star to be put on the spot like that, we feel like it's really about time women embrace the relationship between feminism and gender equality (that is the same) and the difference between a woman's choice and expectations of society. You can be Saif's wife and your own person and a feminist, Bebo!

Good thing producer Rhea Kapoor was there to help out.

When asked about the buzz around Veere Di Wedding she circled back to the question pointed at Kareena and said, "They asked Kareena, ‘Are you a feminist?’ What is the definition of a feminist? A feminist is someone, who believes that boys and girls are equal. That’s the actual definition of a feminist if you look up in the dictionary.".

"Coming back to your question, I am actually not surprised. My TG (target audience) that you speak of is normal girls, women, boys, people and they know this is true (the behaviour of the characters as shown in the trailer) so, how can you be angry about the truth? You have to be relaxed about it. The film assumes that everybody knows that girls are just like you (men). They make the same mistakes, they use the same language, they are just prettier."

Veere Di Wedding is set to release June 1.
