5 must-haves from Market's new sushi menu

2017 was the year of Pan-Asian cuisine and sushi and that's how we're ending it.

Market was one of the many Asian restaurants that opened up in Karachi in 2017. But it stood out due to the unique fusion and variety offered on its menu. Also, their Korean chicken sliders are a win!

Recently Market introduced a new sushi menu and we had to find out more. Knowing these guys, we predicted customised sushi and fun unique touches. And we weren't disappointed.

Sushi time!

We got owners Farah and Asad Vayani to help us out in what to try and we picked out our five favourites from the menu.

1) The Market roll

Great for beginners too

The Market roll is a unique offering at the restaurant. An inside-out roll loaded with spicy crab and cucumber and topped with seared beef and ponzu sauce, it's a roll many would love to try out, including those afraid to try sushi because of uncooked ingredients.

The seared beef was thinly sliced so the there was enough flavour to balance the roll and we loved the sesame seeds that topped it.

2) Spicy salmon roll

Market makes even their average rolls stand out

The spicy salmon roll at Market is your average salmon roll at any sushi restaurant, except they serve it inside out (California roll style) and topped with roe. We have to commend Market on the great quality of fish. From the first bite, we could tell the fish was fresh and good quality.

That being said, the spicy salmon roll got mixed responses at our table. Some weren't leaning towards it because it wasn't too unique an item, some were happy because of the quality and Market's distinctive touches.

3) Fire roll

The fire roll is a fun take on the tempura makimono and we're glad we tried it. With shrimp tempura and avocado rolled in the sushi and topped with yellowfin tuna and eel sauce, the roll was crunchy and flavourful. Market makes the tempura fresh so the roll has some warmth to it. Market's yellowfin tuna is also great quality and considering yellowfin tuna is not easy to find in restaurants, this was a pleasant find.

4) Spicy beach roll

Another unique offering at Market

The spicy beach roll was another roll that got mixed reviews but was liked overall. The beach roll has spicy yellowfin tuna and cucumber rolled in the sushi and is topped with spicy crab and eel sauce. We all loved the yellowfin tuna in the roll, but the spicy crab had us debating. Some enjoyed it, some were indifferent. But the sushi lover would definitely want to try this out.

5) Yellowfin tuna poke bowl

The presentation of the poke bowl was spot on!

We saved the best for last! The poke bowl was an instant hit at our table and we're all itching to go and try it again!

A sushi rice bowl full of avocado, edamame, cucumber and spicy crab apart from the tuna, the poke bowl is a welcome addition to Market's menu. The subtle flavours of each ingredient blended well with each other and kudos to Market for the freshness of the ingredients as well. The bowl is also filling and yes, we want it again.

Celebrate with a dessert

We ended our meal with a dessert that deserves a bonus mention. The crying chocolate is an old Market favourite so it made sense to end our meal with that. Market fuses the chocolate tart and the molten lava cake to create this dessert and it is definitely worth a try.

Market's sushi is priced similarly to most sushi restaurants in Karachi. The sushi lover would do well to give it a try and novices just might find the right roll to get their own love started. Market already has goodies that make us wanting to go back for more and the poke bowl is on that list.
