After Udaari, Kashf Foundation now hopes to tackle taboo topics like mental health and HIV

After giving Pakistani audiences hit TV drama Udaari, Kashf Foundation has embarked on another such venture called Akhri Station highlighting women and gender rights issues.

We got a hint of something happening when actor Mikaal Zulfiqaar took to Instagram and posted a picture of himself with Sanam Saeed and Sarmad Khoosat on set.

Images got in touch with Kashf Foundation as well as Sanam Saeed to find out more.

"It's a mini series directed by Sarmad Khoosat," revealed Sanam, who is playing the lead protagonist in the show slotted for a November launch.

"The plot revolves around seven women who meet on a train... The mini series comprises seven episodes and tells the story of each of those seven women," she said.

Sanam is playing the character of a woman battling depression, one of many mental illnesses neglected in Pakistan.

"Keeping this in mind, Kashf has chosen to highlight HIV, drug addiction, mental health of women, prostitution, violence against women and more through Aakhri Station ─ all of which are prevalent in [the Pakistani] society," a press release stated.

"What I'm striving to achieve with this series is an honest, socially relevant, hard-hitting story that provokes thought and reaches a wider audience. Even if it impacts one person, I will feel that the drama has accomplished its goal," director Sarmad Khoosat said.

The project has been written by Amina Mufti in collaboration with Asghar Nadeem Syed.

"Writing Aakhri Station was a profoundly moving and emotional experience for me. These are not just seven stories but seven harsh realities," Mufti said.

"Kashf Foundation and I are merely reflecting these sad realities in the hope that the aggressors may someday realise the damage they have caused," she added. "If not today, then some day."

"Ultimately, [the series] is about women coming together to help each other and where they can transcend their differences to build a new and better tomorrow," Roshaneh Zafar, the managing director of Kashf Foundation, added.

As the project is currently under production, the channel where it will be aired has yet to be decided.
