Going loco for local: The Vittles Company’s Garlic and Herb Cream Cheese is out of this world

Garlicky goodness with a side of humour? I love it.

If there are two things I love, it’s garlic and cheese. And when you combine those two things together, you’re bound to have a winner. Enter The Vittles Company and its wonderful Garlic & Herb Cream Cheese.

Don’t get me wrong, their Original Cream Cheese is good too (and more economical), but it’s very easy to sell me on anything garlicky. I picked up the cream cheese from Fresh Basket in Karachi’s Badar Commercial, but according to their Instagram page it’s available at a number of stores in Clifton, DHA and KDA. You can also order directly from their website and be treated to the literary excellence that is their Our Story section.

I’m someone who likes cream cheese but I don’t like the price of Kraft or Puck — I’m not going to pay over Rs2,000 for a jar. Vittles sells its Garlic & Herb Cream Cheese for Rs560 for a 200g tub and original for Rs660 for a 300g tub. It’s not exactly super cheap but it is worth it and is far more economical when you compare it to its competitors.

You can have it with bagels, toast, potato skins, chips — the world is your oyster.

When I first saw the tubs, I thought this was an imported product. Most locally packaged products from small businesses seem to all use the same container supplier — which is understandable. Who’s going to dole out wads of cash for packaging when you’re just starting out?

But The Vittles’ packaging was surprising. The tubs are made of a durable plastic and there’s a snooty blond man in a cravat on the packaging that belies its Pakistani origins. I’m easily influenced by cute packaging, so I bought the cream cheese but it wasn’t cute packaging that kept me buying more — that was all thanks to the product itself.

Do yourself a favour and put a pause on buying your imported cream cheeses and give this one a try. You won’t regret it.
