The world lit up purple for Prince yesterday.

And it rained in his home city, Minneapolis.

Yesterday, fans bid adieu to the 'Purple Rain' singer, who was found unresponsive in an elevator at Paisley Park Studios, reports CNN.

A man called 911, saying "The person is dead here. ... And the people are just distraught," according to a transcript of the call released by authorities. " The person who died was soon discovered to be Prince.

Paramedics were unable to revive him upon their arrival and he was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m.

Last week, it was reported that Prince's plane made an unexpected landing in Illinois, after which he was rushed to the hospital. But Prince was back on stage to perform the next day and made light of the situation, saying it was just the flu.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place today.

Cities across America honoured Prince by lighting up their landmarks in his signature colour.

Here's a walk through some of the illuminations:

The 35W bridge in Minneapolis was bathed in purple:

The Omni Hotel in Dallas, Texas, had the words 'Purple Rain' emblazoned across its facade:

The Forum, a musical venue where Prince played several times, also shone in his signature colour:

In a royal coincidence, the Niagara Falls were also lit up in purple, although the intention was to honour Queen Elizabeth on her 90th birthday:

NASA also tweeted a picture of the Crab Nebula, a violet supernova in the constellation of Taurus:
