Celebrities are no strangers to malicious rumours but when your agency has your back, it’s a different ballgame altogether. K-pop boyband BTS’ agency Big Hit Music has issued a statement saying that the company has filed a “criminal complaint” against a user for multiple defamatory posts containing “false information” about the band.

On September 29, the agency shared their statement through application Weverse and said the company is proceeding with legal action against the perpetrators of malicious activities related to the K-pop boy band.

“Our company regularly initiates legal proceedings against perpetrators of malicious activities related to BTS, including defamation, personal attacks, sexual harassment, the spread of groundless information, and ill-intentioned criticism. We would like to provide an update on these activities.

“We have recently filed additional criminal complaints against postings with personal attacks and defamation using new information provided by fans as well as collected through our monitoring initiatives,” read the statement.

The statement read that the company has found multiple defamatory posts spreading the “same ill-intentioned rumour in multiple platforms,” resulting in a criminal complaint that they now have filed against the poster after gathering the repetitively uploaded posts.

The company added that it is “currently following our legal response process which monitors and collects evidence on malicious postings for 365 days and then includes them on the complaint. Active reporting of our fans has been a big help to our malicious postings monitoring initiatives.”

It stressed that it will continue to initiate strict measures to ensure that “malicious acts” are not repeated in the future and that its policy of no settlement or leniency remains in effect regarding the new case against the person who spread the dating rumours.

Big Hit requested people and fans of the band to use their hotline or email them to report any cases of abuse. “We will continue to work to ensure that the rights of our artists are fully protected,” concluded the statement.

According to Soompi, a source from the company shared that after a thorough police investigation, they have identified a suspect who has been spreading rumours on multiple platforms. Now with the posts as evidence, they have filed a complaint against the suspect and the case has been delivered to the prosecutor’s office in South Korea.

While the statement issued by Big Hit did not mention what the malicious activities were, the most recent rumour to take over the internet about a BTS member has been one that has been going on for weeks and claims that V, whose real name is Kim Taehyung, and Blackpink’s Jennie are in a romantic relationship.

Jin, another member of the K-pop group, commented on the situation via Weverse and wrote, “What on earth did the hater do for it to reach the prosecutor. Going through all that trouble…”

BTS is a K-pop band that shot to fame globally after delivering hits like ‘Permission to Dance’, ‘Idol’, ‘DNA’, ‘Butter’, ‘Mic Drop’ and more. They debuted in 2013 and consist of seven members — Jin, Suga, RM, J-hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook. As of this year, the band is on a break to work on solo projects. Blackpink, the girl group, debuted in 2016 with ‘Whistle’ and went on to deliver songs like ‘Kill This Love’, ‘Boombayah’, ‘How You Like That’ and most recent ‘Pink Venom’. Blackpink consists of four members — Jisoo, Rose, Jennie and Lisa.
