The citizens of Hawkins will be returning for the final showdown in Stranger Things’ fifth and final season. With 2024 set as the year for the release, the writers of Netflix’s hit show revealed that they have officially started on the fifth season.

On Tuesday, their official Twitter account for the show, Stranger Writers, made the big announcement. The caption was titled as “Day 1,” with a photo that showed the iconic opening scene logo with number 5 scribbled on a whiteboard.

Season 4 of Matt and Ross Duffer’s 1983 sci-fi series ended on a major cliffhanger, where the gang reunited but the town of Hawkins is facing another threat as Vecna’s scheme to merge the Upside Down with the Indiana town worked.

According to Variety, the final season will see the cast fighting to protect the remaining citizens of Hawkins and attempting to destroy the Upside Down once and for all.

The fourth season of Stranger Things was split into two, Volume I released in May and Volume II in July and both proved to be extremely popular, becoming the streaming site’s most streamed English-language series. The show also bagged 13 nominations at this year’s Emmy awards, including one for the Best Drama Series.

Like many other shows on Netflix, Stranger Things has a huge star cast that includes Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Noah Schnapp, Winona Ryder, Joe Keery, Natalie Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Maya Hawke, Cara Buono, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Eduardo Franco, Jamie Campbell Bower and Joseph Quinn.

The Duffer brothers are the executive producers of the series alongside Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Iain Paterson and Curtis Gwinn.
