Ready or not, here they pop: All the reasons that make us say popcorn is a better choice for the munchies

From movie theatres to all-nighters with friends, popcorn seems like an obvious go-to snacking option for all.

But with all the fuss around healthy snacking and making better dietary choices, it might seem confusing whether popcorn is actually a healthy munchie or plain calorie-packed comfort food.

Here are all facts on popcorn that have convinced us that the snack is a lot more than just a stress-busting snack:

Popcorn is made of whole grains

Duh!

Just like brown rice, oatmeal and whole-fiber bread, popcorn too is made of whole grains which means the little fluffy, cloud-like pops pack up dietary fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, and beneficial fats.

Those properties alone ensure that popcorn remains efficient at improving digestive health, promoting regularity of bowel movements.

Popcorn can actually prevent Type 2 diabetes

Due to its whole grain benefits, munching on popcorn can reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, which is especially common amongst middle-aged and young people alike in today's world.

In addition, popcorn has a low glycemic index (GI), meaning that it may help maintain blood sugar levels, avoid sharp bursts of fluctuation.

Consuming low-GI foods can help people improve glucose and lipid levels.

The snack lowers your risk of heart disease and hypertension

Consuming fibrous food like popcorn can decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Refrain from sprinkling extra salt and butter on your popcorn and you automatically help the munchie keep your blood pressure under control.

Natural or lite butter, hot and spicy or plain salted, there's an option out there for all sorts of tastebuds

Imagine you're hosting the squad for an all-nighter and each person comes up with their favourite flavour for those midnight munchies.

Been there, seen that?

We recommend stocking up on affordable, wide ranging snacks to avoid last minute drama.

House of Samrah recently launched their 'Freshly' range of popcorn with a wide variety of flavours that can be easily prepared in a microwave in under 5 minutes.

And that's not all. The brand has also introduced a fat free '94% Butter' microwave popcorn option that packs only 2 g of fat per portion.

The lineup also offers a Freshly Lite Butter Microwave Pop Corn that contains 4.5 g of fat per serving, much lesser than the ones we get at the movie theatres.

Lose weight without pulling the plug on your snack routine

Bet you've heard this one already: unlike crisps, popcorn packs a lot more than plain calories and carbs that aid weight gain.

When compared to most calorie and carb dense munchies, popcorn is one of the only snacks that does more good to the body than harm - of course when used in moderation, without over buttering/flavouring the serving.

Amazing! A bhutta or challi (corn on the cob) or maize seeds can be as good too and much more economical. All these flavored ones are on the costly side.
