A Mumbai court rejected on Friday a bail application filed by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan. He was detained on Saturday night in a case relating to drugs.

He was initially taken into custody by India's Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for alleged possession of banned drugs and substance abuse on board a cruise ship in Mumbai and later arrested. He was remanded into NCB custody till October 7 and presented in court. He was presented in court again on Friday.

According to the Hindustan Times, the court said his bail application was not maintainable. The two other young men who were arrested along with Aryan also had their bail petitions dismissed.

Aryan's lawyer had argued that the 23-year-old was unlikely to flee the country if granted bail. He said no drugs had been found on Aryan and contested the NCB's argument that he could tamper with evidence if granted bail. An earlier bail plea filed in the Bombay High Court was also rejected.

Officers had seized 13 grams of cocaine, five grams of MD, 21 grams of charas and 22 pills of MDMA, and 133,000 INR during the raid.

Aryan was sent to judicial custody for 14 days despite the NCB asking for his remand. He was booked under sections 8(c), 20(b), 27 and 35 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

The Hindustan Times quoted an NCB director who said that 18 people, including a Nigerian national, have been arrested in the case.

Several Bollywood celebrities have come to Aryan's defence. Actor Hrithik Roshan recently wrote a supportive open letter to him on Instagram.

The tragedy that has happened to Shah Rukh Khan vis-a-vis his son and drugs reminded me of the tragedy of the great Marlon Brando who had a nervous breakdown when his son was sent to prison for manslaughter and his daughter committed suicide. Children sometimes are the cause of the downfall of the parents.

It is about a very small quantity of drugs that carries a max. punishment of 6 months or a fine of 10.000 rupees. The maximum punishment of 6 months is for a quantity below one kg and as the possession, in this case, is at the lower end of 0 - 1 kg; and the drug was to be consumed by multiple people, the punishment will probably be only a fine plus imprisonment amounting to the days they already have spent behind the bars. Considering the above, it is a bit peculiar that they have been negated a bail.
