Posting about the Palestine attacks: Three celebrities who got it wrong and four who got it right

Some celebrities didn't strike the right tone with their messages of support.
12 May, 2021

A resurgence in violence against Palestinians has the world talking. Hundreds of Palestinians have been wounded in attacks by Israeli forces on the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and protests against the illegal occupation of Sheikh Jarrah. While the world is now talking about this, not everyone is saying the right thing.

At least 215 Palestinians were hurt in the violence at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, including 153 who were hospitalised and the Palestinian Red Crescent said at least 520 Palestinians have been wounded since Monday, including more than 200 who were hospitalised.

Many people having been posting about the violence, including celebrities, but there were some posts that left people shaking their heads.

People who got it wrong

Malala Yousafzai

Malala's tweet about the Palestine attacks didn't mention Palestine or Israel. Instead, the Nobel laureate tweeted a carefully worded message and said the "violence in Jerusalem — especially against children — is unbearable". Not mentioning who the victims or attackers are adds to the misguided notion that this is a two-way street. It's not. People holding sticks and stones are being attacked and forced out of their homes and places of worship by people with guns and teargas.

Greta Thunberg

If Malala's was a political tiptoe, Greta's post was a shuffle. Her "Devastating to follow the developments in Jerusalem and Gaza" made no mention of the attacks, the victims, or anything really.

But the real cherry on top was her followup tweet where she said she wasn't against Israel or Palestine.

"Needless to say I’m against any form of violence or oppression from anyone or any part," she wrote. This reeks of pandering to people calling her out for being "anti-Israel" for her first tweet. It also reminds us of a certain "All Lives Matter" movement.

Murad Raas

Punjab Education Minister Murad Raas also tweeted about the violence but his tweet left a lot of people scratching their heads. "Where does all the Palestine support money go? Why can’t they buy a single gun to defend themselves. Being bombed and shot [in] 2021 [yet] still using stones?" he demanded in his tweet.

He doesn't seem to understand how Palestinians are living in an apartheid system and have a tough enough time getting their basic necessities, let alone arming themselves to the teeth with expensive weaponry that the Israel government would never let them get their hands on.

People who got it right

The Hadid sisters

Gigi and Bella Hadid are half Palestinian and very vocal about the oppression of Palestinians. The sisters have been posting about the attacks and people's silence on the human rights violations in Palestine.

They've been using their positions as Palestinian-Americans to educate people about Palestine and the atrocities against its people for a while and have never shied away from speaking up.

Mia Khalifa

Mia Khalifa is one of the most outspoken celebrities about the violence in Palestine and she's calling out the United States government for funding that violence. She has been sharing multiple posts about acts of violence against Palestinians and using her fame to spread awareness.

Swara Bhasker

Indian actor Swara Bhasker has been reminding people that the Palestinian cause has to do with human rights. "It is first and foremost an anti-imperialist, anti-colonial and anti-apartheid cause and that’s why it should concern us all, even non-Muslims," she wrote. And she's right. It's not just Muslims who should be concerned with what's happening in Palestine, it's everyone.

She has also really been going after the Israeli government, so much so that she's being targeted by pro-Israeli and IDF fan groups.

Mark Ruffalo

Actor and activist Mark Ruffalo has been posting about the violence against Palestinians for a while and has also called on governments to impose sanctions on Israel to end its human rights violations and free Palestinians.

No Muslim country has ever been serious about Palestinians. But the issue is about human rights for ALL. You can't help one side by by ignoring the other.

One remembers how the Great Britain was against sanctions on South Africa. Then how on Earth will the world sanction Israel? Specially when United States is on its back

The message delivered by the first three....was loud and clear. If someone deliberately wants to ignore it through nitpicking then that's their problem.

Huge respect for Mark Ruffalo, given that he can face real consequences because the industry he operates in is full of Zionists.

In such cases, when commenting about human rights, oppressions and atrocities, one has to be straight forward to convey their support. Don't be shy and try to give diplomatic message.

What should we call those who are killed, wounded in Hamas attack? Are they not victims? Why would Israel keep quiet when Hamas is firing 200 times?

Israelused to fel threatened surrounded as it was after the creation of the site based on home for people of Judaism faith. Absurd as it was, now they colonise and threatened from whom they stole their assets - Palestinian land. Solution? Remove faith based political entities. All nation states should be multi faith, multicultural pieces of planet earth.

Unite against apartheid and heavy handed atrocities of ISRAEL. Even Israelis with human hearts are hurting as they have seen them in the past. This is a global issue that can't be ignored. UAE and other Gulf states should recall their ambassadors and object.
