In a dramatic moment, Mrs Sri Lanka stripped of her crown on stage by former winner

Pushpika De Silva was crowned, forcefully de-crowned, and then crowned again.
07 Apr, 2021

Controversy erupted at the Mrs Sri Lanka beauty pageant in Colombo on Sunday when a former winner forcefully took the winning contestant's crown off her head and awarded it to the runner-up. She falsely claimed that the winner, Pushpika De Silva, was divorced, and hence ineligible for the contest, which is only open to married women.

Controversy at a beauty pageant? Who would have seen that coming?

The incident happened moments after De Silva was announced the winner and given the winner's sash and crown. The crowd cheered her on as she waved to them with a huge smile across her face. Her competitors stood unmistakably broken, though cheering her on, but hoping it was them. De Silva's happiness was short lived.

Just a few moments later, while all the contestants were still on stage, the 2019 Mrs Sri Lanka and 2020 Mrs World, Caroline Jurie, made her way to the stage and picked up the microphone.

"I have a small announcement," she started. As heads turned to her, she continued, "As for the Mrs World Inc, there's a rule that you'll have to be married, and not divorced. So, I'm taking my first step saying that the crown goes to the first runner-up".

To everyone's shock, Jurie then turned to De Silva, forcefully stripping her of the crown she was wearing, hurting her in the process, and put it upon the head of the runner up. De Silva was shocked at this, and feeling insulted, she walked right off the stage. All of this was recorded on camera.

After the incident, the organisers announced that Jurie was wrong about her claim that De Silva was unmarried. She and her husband are separated, but they have not gotten a divorce. As per the rules of the competition, contestants must be "married at the date of entry." Correcting Jurie's actions, they gave the crown back to De Silva, declaring her once again the winner of Mrs Sri Lanka 2020.

Mrs World Inc issued a press release to address the incident itself. "We are deeply disturbed and sincerely regret the behaviour of our current title holder, Mrs Caroline Jurie, Mrs World 2020, at the crowning,” read the statement. They announced that they were looking into the matter, affirming that the right steps will be taken.

"Let it be known, Mrs World Inc does not sit in moral judgment," the statement read. "If the delegate sent by Mrs. Sri Lanka-World to compete in the international competition is legally married she will be accepted."

De Silva too took to Facebook to express her anger and dismay at the situation. In her statement she clarified that while she and her husband were separated, they were not divorced. She said that such things would not have been ignored by the organisers, and had she been ineligible, she wouldn't have gotten this far.

Expressing her disgust at the actions of Jurie, she said in her statement, "I say a true queen is not a woman who snatches another woman's crown, but a woman who secretly sets another woman's crown!"

She found it best to forgive and in a followup statement made on Facebook, wrote, "I don't hate anyone and I've forgiven those who did that to me at the same moment. Nothing can be won by hate."

De Silva now goes onto compete with other countries' winners for the crown of the international pageant, Mrs World.

It's clear from the get go that the former winner hated the current winner. The way she put her crown on, no hugs or smile, then walked away and turned her attentions to the runner up with OTT sympathy, hugs and comforting whispers and smiles. This was real life text book case of 'Mean Girls'.

Useless competition. Women are only objectified in these competitions. Then the West brags about equality and respect for the same women who are objectified.

Where is the criticism of these so-called beauty shows that objectify women in the name of Miss this and Miss that? What happened to the mantra of feminism?

The former winner, Mrs Jurie, was clearly jealous of 2021 winner De Silva. I could not believe the way Mrs De Silva was treated and humiliated at the hands of Jurie. Congrats to De Silva for keeping calm - you are a true lady!!!

@UJ you neither understand liberalism. Nor feminism. Wikipedia covers both topics. Have a read and educate yourself on it. I don't subscribe to either label. But my underestwndignis feminism (originally) is about choice. It's not about taking sides or putting down men or dominating men or women becoming men. Women are objectified in Pakistan too. We don't have beauty pageants. If a woman chooses to enter such a competition that's her choice. If a woman is forced to enter, then obviously that's not OK. What do you think about male pageants where men are in speedos or underwear/swimwear showing off their muscles, bodies all oiled up competing for some award or title?

@ali go read what feminism is. If the women choose to enter such silly competitions and be objectified then what do you want others to do? Force or threaten them to not participate? Feminism is about choice. After all in Pakistan women are objectified too.

@Ali da Malanga well feminism is about choice and not about telling women what to do. Women choose to enter such pageants just like men enter fitness and muscle pageants showing off their bodies. Their choice. However if somebody is forcing somebody to participate then that's not done. You can read more on Wikipedia about feminism especially the first wave feminism.

I hate women like that former winner. Women are the worst enemies of other women. I don't trust women much. I am more inclined to trust men. But women can just be so mean, jealous and snide.

So I guess some guys decided that a man will decide the fate of a woman. “Married contestants”? Really? So the lady has to have that tag and a man has the power to take it away from her if he threatens to leave her? Is this what these new world pageants promote? Come on world community. Sad the excuses being given “they are separated but still married so she is eligible” this entire money-making charade should end today.

@Laila "Wikipedia covers both topics." Don't think there is much to address someone who gets their information from Wikipedia. Casual objectification of both men and women are wrong. Problem with liberalism and feminism is that they have transformed into an opposition to religion rather than sticking to their core lassez-faire principles. These double standards have undermined the credibility of these ideologies. They have morphed into self-destructing mode as they have no firm ground to stand on without any objective moral standards.
