Ahad Raza Mir postpones Canadian Hamlet production in wake of coronavirus

Far away from home, on a stage in Calgary, Ahad Raza Mir delivers a powerhouse of a performance.

Playing the prince of Denmark seeking revenge against his uncle Claudius, Hamlet is everything - vengeful, vindictive and unforgiving. But most of all, he is moving, as you watch him grasp the stage as his own.

However unfortunately, in the wake of coronavirus, Mir has taken to social media to announce that the production will be postponed to 2021.

"To be or not to be.... Well, unfortunately not this year. The Rose Theatre and I have decided to postpone our production of Hamlet to next year," the Yaqeen Ka Safar actor posted on Instagram.

"Its too bad, but we'll all meet soon enough to experience the magic of Shakespeare together. Thank you to all my fans for your patience and love. See you at the theatre in 2021."

Previously, Ahad was announced as winner for The Betty Mitchell Awards in the 'Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama' category for his play.

"Hamlet is particularly an exhausting character. There’s so much air that needs to be created around him. I can’t just ease into him during the course of the performance," he had revealed in a conversation with Images.

"The first time I am on stage, I am bawling my eyes out and screaming. He laughs, he cries and he’s mentally disturbed and for two hours and 45 minutes, for 35 more shows, I am him.”

Mir also mentioned how his mother couldn't recognise him on stage.

“She told me she actually felt scared of me. I just thought that I must be doing something right if my own mother could think that way!”

Very well done to receive that award. Hamlet is probably one of the most difficult parts to play. Even Richard Burton and Laurence Olivier got stage fright over it.
