Sanam Saeed and Shamoon Abbasi call out hotel for extortion during quarantine

The actors are back home after being stranded in Thailand but their quarantine arrangements have been less than ideal
16 Apr, 2020

After so long, the Ishrat Made in China team is finally back home. But at what cost?

Sanam Saeed took to Twitter to share just that; the actor spoke about her return to Pakistan and what the quarantine's been like so far.

A photo posted by Instagram (@instagram) on

The cast and crew had wrapped up shooting for Mohib Mirza's directorial debut when Covid-19 became a global pandemic, leading to a lockdown of cities and international flights. The team was stuck in Thailand for over 20 days and had appealed to Pakistan government for assistance.

The actor revealed that upon landing, the passengers were all put in isolation immediately, but not only were they being charged for it, they were being charged a lot. The actor gave an update this morning about the past two days.

Saeed shared that not only did the ticket back to Pakistan cost Rs 111,000 each (one way!) and the meals Rs 1000, but the people staying were forced to pay the hefty accommodation costs for the entire week upfront, accompanied by the threat that they would be sent somewhere else if they didn't comply.

She also clarified that the stragglers were told that accommodation would be free.

"We understand the government is doing their best to manage the situation," said Sanam. "But... stranded travelers need be better informed of what to expect... Embassy must clearly state stay options and costs [and] people need to be mentally, physically and financially prepared."

Shamoon Abbasi, who has been giving updates ever since they were stranded in Thailand, also spoke up about the current situation calling out the hotel for extortion.

According to Abbasi, "At the airport we were told that we will be staying in Ramada hotel (which we didn't ask or demanded) and were told that this includes our stay and food... Now the management of the hotel (Ramada) is threatening every one to pay or leave the hotel immediately."

"There are people that have no idea on how to pay further as every one have paid such a big Amount of money to get back thinking this will include the stay, food and tests"

Abbasi revealed that the passengers were told at the airport that they'll have a one night stay "and will be tested in the morning" with the results coming in six to eight hours. If negative, they can go home.

However, "The management said we can't do your test and you have to pay for the stay till a week from now as the government has implied a weeks lockdown for all those passengers that came from abroad... We are ready to do our test as all the other passengers are!"

He went on to say, "We demand a clearer picture on why aren't we tested yet as we were already spending our time in quarantine abroad... And why the hotel management is threatening us every 10 mins to leave the hotel!"

Shamoon asked the authorities to look into it.

The people traveling back were not just big celebrities like Sanam Saeed, Shamoon Abbasi and Mohib Mirza but also crew members and staffers who were already struggling when stranded in Thailand. To be hit with such uncertain financial costs without any preparation or options is the last thing people need right now.

Everyone arriving to Pakistan has a choice between either going to Govt quarantine centers or to a Hotel at their own cost which our government negotiated at a lower rate. The crew arriving from Thailand must pay to the hotel if they want to stay or they should leave for the Govt Quarantine centers. The Hotel management has all the right to ask for money as people generally don't pay once their stay is over. These media personnel will never tell the true picture.

She didnt mentioned meals etc cost in thialand as costs were being borne by producer probably. Now she had to pay from pocket where a meal of 1000 is bothering her too much while its cheap for above avg hotel. Also Everyone suffering from price rise. Why she is distressed. She must honour the code and feel suffering of other Pakistanis and accept her own suffering

. Simple if u cant pay for vip stay then move to regular quarantine facilities. Government is in no position to be blackmailed by these media savy individuals. Firstly special flight was flown to get them from thailand with oneway flying empty because of their own fault being stuck shooting their own movie and not cominf back to country at the time it was deemed appropriate.

What’s the point of all these over-the-top precautions if everyone will congregate for Friday prayers tomorrow? The govt is toothless against the real menace to society.

Stop complaining about quarantine, you have to stay there for 2 weeks at least. Govt cant afford to pay your hotel bill, we are a poor country. You are privileged and financially sorted so pls don't whinge. You paid for a special chartered flight which was going to be expensive. You chose to go overseas on your own and decided to stay there even after things were getting worse, should have taken the first flight home rather than trying to complete your shooting. Get your family to deliver food or order it yourself if you have complaints. Again, just stop complaining and be happy that you were allowed back.

and what is the response from the hotel ? or from government.? I have felt myself that our authorities do not feel obliged to inform people, nor show any empathy towards anyone ...like flight cancelled why inform passengers authorities be llike "they will know once they come to airport...." For them it would be like hey these people coming from abroad must be billionaires so why tell them, they can afford...on the other hand, some one some where in authorities would have got some favors from Ramada for this forced stay...Why not ask people to pay 8000 Rupees and get privately tested through Chugtai Lab...but nope, why help nahhh we don't do that

What do they expect? the VIP carpet to be rolled out to them? the entire country is suffering because of the lockdown and they are complaining about expensive food. When these celebrities can get married abroad, have kids abroad, and have all their shows shot abroad then why even bother coming back to Pakistan?

Excellent. These folks chose to stay despite warnings from everyone to leave. The arrangements cannot be offered for free and someone has to pay.

Rs.1000 for the meal is just $6, in a 4 Star hotel. How much did they charge you per night stay? About Rs.110000 fare that is $700, my wife paid $3000 to travel back from Lahore To Toronto. We are living in a different world now we have to pay the price.

What kind of celebrities can’t afford a stay at Ramada - a 3 star hotel? And why are they complaining about the govt? If you can’t afford it go to the Govt camp like other ordinary citizens.

Sanam, you were treated as privileged and brought home much before others who have been waiting for longer than you did. A lot of others who are coming home from UAE are being kept in Haji camp while you are logged in a hotel, why? Don't you think, it is fair that you pay your expenses yourself as otherwise you should have been sent to the Haji camp just like others.

@F Its not just the matter of sanam saeed, there are several other common people there who can not afford to have a 1000Rs/person meal. One of my friend who just finished his studies, is also there with his family. They bought 3x expensive 5 tickets and now paying minimum 10,000 Rs each day along with the staying charges. Do you think they can easily afford it? Are these relief flights or loot flights to bring back stranded Pakistanis at exceptionally high ticket prices?
