Wasim Akram wants Pakistan to treat its heroes better

The cricketer apologised to Muhammad Waseem after the boxer's latest win for Pakistan went unnoticed.

Wasim Akram is not afraid to call out his country folks when it comes to respecting their heroes.

Boxer Muhammad Waseem made his return to his home country after defeating Philippines’ Conrado Tanamor in Dubai last week but his victory as well as his arrival back home went largely unnoticed.

"Nobody from the boxing federation or the government came to welcome me at the airport," Waseem had said about the matter. The boxer had even dedicated the win to Kashmir.

When news spread about the lack of celebration of his return, the boxer made sure to bring up the fact that it's not about a fancy protocol but respect.

"I'm not fighting to get istaqbals at the airport. I'm fighting so that Pakistan gets good istaqbal all over the world. Every fight, every camp, every training, every tour, is another opportunity for me to show the boxing world the world class boxing talent Pakistan has."

His words definitely left an impact on many, including Wasim Akram, who immediately responded to the boxer's tweet, apologising for the lack of love and respect given to him for his win and at his return.

Wasim made sure to apologise "on the behalf of Pakistan", sharing: "Sometimes we as a country need to be 'smacked on the face' with the fist of reality to wake us up and remind us how we should be treating our hero’s."

He made sure to add, "I’m picking you up from the airport next time myself! Massive congratulations on the win!"

Muhammad Waseem immediately wrote back to the former cricketer, thanking him for his heartfelt words.

It's true that we don't really pay attention to our athletes and their achievements unless they're related to cricket. Maybe it's time we celebrate all accomplishments that bring Pakistan to the spotlight all over the world.

Not only Waseem Akram bhai, I am also ashamed for not able to celebrate your success. I am not in Pakistan but would request all Pakistanis to post his success on their FB/Insta/Twitter page and show our love for our hero. I am doing this now, will you?

Congrats to him on winning another fight. Unfortunately this is the reason our country not growing as they don't pay respect to the person who is the asset of Pakistan but provide full coverage to criminals who put country so behind by looting all the money and still enjoying VVIP coverage all over even in jail.

Shame on boxing federation as well as the sporting governing body. Moreover, shame on people of Balochistan and especially Quetta not welcoming him at the airport. I feel so ashamed and bad for him.

You are great...don't lose heart, just keep fighting. We've to knock down and kick out the thug elite that bankrupted us from all sides.

in sharp contrast to the way Canada treated its winning US open champion A rally, attended by no one less than the prime Minister, by the mayor, by the ex mayor and the longest serving mayor and icon. The key to the city of Mississauga, a road named in her honour

It's a grest failure from media outlets who are just busy covering political talks and figures that give stress and nothing else. This had to be a front page news about Waseem.

Waseem is huge. I have witnessed all his fights. I have witness him struggle to train! He is an underdog and he'll bring a spotlight to Pakistan's boxing prowesses! Glad one Cricketer Waseem is acknowledging the new boxer Waseem!

We lack system and for us only sport is cricket. People are patriotic but at the end for media everything is money. Wasim did his job and at the end it’s the result who cares. But the moment Wasim did wrong while media and people will blame and criticize. So Wasim the things work differently, just focus on yourself and your career, they will follow you themselves but don’t pay attention.

Nice call out Wasim, I'll second that! If a sportsman represents his country on the world stage. His country and countrymen should acknowledge that, too many young people are only interested in watching mind numbing Indian films instead of using that time to try and better themselves.
