UET Lahore withdraws measure for gender segregation post social media outrage

The order, enforced on September 6, aimed to have separate sitting arrangements for male and female students
09 Sep, 2019

The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) in Lahore withdrew their notification regarding gender segregation in the canteen/cafeteria.

Earlier on September 6, the university had issued a notice which ordered for separate sitting arrangements for male and female students.

The move caused outrage on social media and many responded to this notificaton and ridiculed it.

However, a new statement has been issued by UET which reveals that the notification has been withdrawn.

According to the new notice, the previous letter was "issued without the approval of the Vice Chancellor."

We really wish universities would focus on actual issues that students are going through and ways to help better the process of getting an education. Here's a thought.

UET student here so will have to say this its the most un-welcoming place for girls who want to be engineer's rather than creating an atmosphere where girls are feel and both girls and boys are trained to work alongside each other in the field post graduation they do the exact opposite girls have to put up with a lot a misogyny at uet.

Once upon a time in the days of united Pakistan two universities of engineering and technology were established: West Pakistan University of Engineering & Technology (currently UET, Lahore), and East Pakistan University of Engineering & Technology (currently BUET, Dhaka). Overs the years politics took its toll and standards at UET declined, whereas BUET has excelled in academic standards! Politics and Feudalism have attenuated everything! What a pity! The state and status of science and technology education in the country have gone south! All key decision makers are acting like boiling frogs!

No wonder Pakistani men and women don’t know how to interact with each other, when we have this sort of mentality prevalent

This 2019 and not the stone age UET is trying to go back to. I am a UET graduate and had female students in the class with no issues.

Universities provide an excellent platform for potential spouses to get to know each other (with descency as matured human beings). By taking this opportunity away from them, the "educated elite" want to maintain the status quo which is to exploit women.

About time that students are regarded as grown-up individuals. They are perfectly able to decide for themselves get out of their way; of intellectual development.

@isha i am sure thats why VC issued the original message. Very sad that UET was influenced to retreat their appropriate action by the online thug bullies.

News Flash - men and women are capable of sharing a public cafeteria - they are merely eating their meals, not having sex on the tables! Women exist in every facet of society. Pakistan needs to embrace it and move forward. One would expect universities to be leaders in attitudinal change. Even KSA is starting to relax its ridiculous segregation rules.
