Urwa and Mawra Hocane think you can eat your depression away

"We keep hearing people have depression or some mental disease and it's all because of food, no other reason," said Urwa
Updated 07 Aug, 2019

When will our celebrities stop making ignorant statements about mental health?

The Hocane sisters, Mawra and Urwa appeared on Nida Yasir's morning show to promote their new clothing line, U X M and somehow the conversation shifted to talking about mental well-being.

In a clip that is now making rounds on social media, it's clear that they think depression is solely caused by your diet. Urwa went on to make a blanket statement: "There are so many problems these days, we hear someone say that they've got depression or mental 'disease', but its all because of food! There's no other reason."

“It’s what you put in your body", added Mawra, nodding in agreement.

It's about time celebrities educate themselves regarding mental health issues. Trivialising such an important issue is never okay. While we agree that eating a well-balanced diet is important and part of self-care, it is irresponsible to say it is the ONLY thing that causes mental illness or mood disorders like depression. Not to mention, sometimes it's just not in your control because not eating or not eating healthy is often even a symptom of depression.

Also, not everyone can afford to eat avocado ka halwa, if you know what we're talking about.

Mental illnesses are as real as physical ailments so we must make it acceptable for people to seek professional and medical help when they are going through a troubling time, instead of telling them to turn to things like religion, or food in this case. While that can help as a secondary support mechanism, it is dangerous to imply that those are treatments.

As confirmed by a Harvard Medical School study, there are several causes of depression that include faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability, stressful life events, or even side-effects of medication like birth control.

Mawra has since taken to her Instagram to defend the statement through a Google screenshot which reads: “If you eat lots of processed meat, fried food, refined cereals, candies, pastries, and high fats products, you are more likely to be anxious and depressed."

Well, looks like she completely missed the point. Even the screenshot doesn't state that food is the only reason for depression. Let's hope that our celebrities learn to admit their mistakes, recognise their own influence and privilege and make amends.

This is why celebrities should stay mum about things they don't understand. Misguiding people about medical conditions is a grave sin.

These are actors and actress barely know about life. But since they are connected to the media people tend to follow and listen. Very injurious for them to suggest any medical remedies for the public.

I think what they probably meant to say was that diet plays a part in making people feel depressed and anxious rather than it being the sole reason...

Choice of food does not cause depression. Appetite is related , increased or decreased appetite can be a sign of depression. Relating food to depression the way these girls did shows their lack of information . People on tv hold power and can and influence common people like me . They should choose their words and opinion very carefully before sharing on these powerful platforms. Life is much more complicated then sayings like “Acha khaya karo khush raha karo”.

Nida Yasir show is already a nuisance and ignorant people like these sisters help in making these kind of programs more pathetic. The problem is instead of apologising and accepting that they have made a grave mistake by giving a wrong statement they are insisting that what they have said is correct.

These sister are still trying to educate people by providing wrong screen shots from the internet. What an irony! They are not ready to accept their mistake, it reflects their haughty behaviour. Now they have made more difficult for those to get medical attention where families already treat depression as a normal thing which does not require treatment.

There are billions of people on this planet and billion types of depression. So everyone whon is suffering from it might have different causes but will have same symptoms. Some people live all their lives in depression but not realising it, but some people are lucky enough to get help in the initial stages. Cure to this problem is varieties of things which exclude family support, exercise, personal hygiene having baths etc, and listening to others advice, and also diet as well . These are things that sounds easy to do for someone with healthy mind but it's a mountain to climb for a person who is struggling with depression. People who are helping those who are suffering from this disease should have patience and knowledge of all the above things to keep reminding the patient again and again until it's registered in their brain. Time is the cure for this.

Can someone please do the nation the service of banning Nida Yasir from live national tv. She is much too ignorant to deserve this kind of position and power.
