Asma Aziz's dancing video does not justify her being tortured: Sanam Saeed

Sanam defended Asma after people justified the torture inflicted upon her following the leak of her dance video
02 Apr, 2019

Following the furor over Asma Aziz's dancing video which was leaked last week on social media, Sanam Saeed has something to say.

The Cake star tweeted in defense of the woman after people victim-blamed her and justified her husband's torture and ill-treatment after the video went viral.

"It's like saying if a prostitute was raped it's her fault anyway. When will some of you really understand the meaning of consent? An old leaked video of Asma Aziz dancing does not justify her being tortured for refusing to dance when she doesn't feel like it. Have mercy!" she wrote.

Last week Lahore arrested two men on allegations that they had tortured and abused a woman.

In a video circulating on social media, Asma said Faisal (her husband) "took my clothes off in front of his employees [domestic staff]. The employees held me as he shaved my hair off and burned it. My clothes were bloody. I was bound by a pipe and hung from the fan. He threatened to hang me naked."

The case quickly captured attention on social media, with prominent personalities including Shireen Mazari condemning the incident and calling for justice to be served.

Oh dear! I wasn't expecting Sanam to use very poor choice of words to defend Asma Aziz. Don't get me wrong, I second what Sanam is saying and I completely support that no matter what Asma has done in her life doesn't warrant such torture & character assassination on top. Sanam just used wrong words to support the poor lady

Is anyone actually saying that the low-life was in any way justified in committing the ghastly crime against a woman? I hope not.

It is different to dance in friends' company ( many women do ) and entirely different to dance for domestic staff. She had every right to refuse.

100% agreed with Sanam. Dancing or not could be a discussion point but forcing somebody to do something is bad. And torturing in any capacity is a plain crime that must be dealt with.

There is no justification, excuse, explanation, or euphemism for the husband's conduct, period. Any men offering explanations should shut up now.

These dances do not certify that Asma is a bad person or she was not tortured ! Critics should look into their own homes and she who is doing what ! Girls were forced to do more vulgar dances on TV in Sahir Lodiis show !

In her police brief she herself told that she was forced to dance by her husband, but in video people can themselves judge whether she was dancing by force or by her will.... and by the way prostitute is prostitute you cannot justify wrong doings on the basis of economic hardship.

its not about justification, its about choices you make in life. What happened to her was definitely wrong, no can justify that and people should be punished, but she had more chances of getting this abuse because of the crowed she was moving in .

I saw her dance video leaked on YouTube. There is nothing wrong in it, most of our girls dance this way in weddings and other such occasions and they are all treated respectfully. Moreover, even if the dance is vulgar or disrespectful that doesn’t mean that a person is treated so brutally. Nothing can justify the deed of her husband and he should be punished so severely that it sets the example for others.

I am stumped. Speechless and feel ashamed as a man! If educated people are saying something like that then what do you expect from the uneducated. No wonder why people torture animals in Pak because they don't think animals are living beings just like humans that can hear, see, feel pain etc. The reality is that all these people probably also beat up/torture their wives and now are afraid that it will be their turn next. In my opinion, all those who are siding with the (barbaric) accused should be caught prosecuted and penalized (wouldn't the be a day). Pak is a patriarchal society and as women are gaining/claiming their rights, it is making men nervous so they are doing everything possible to save one of their own kind.

Her husband had no right to treat her like that. It is cruel and barbaric. If he is let go, then this will set yet another example of how our society treats the vulnerable and weak segments of our society and women usually top this list.

The entire Azima episode depicts our society's thinking that a woman is a man's property which he can use any which way he pleases. When our thinking is stuck at such low levels, the concept of consent becomes superfluous. Having said that I agree with Sanam Saeed but her comparison of Azima episode with a prostitute being raped is an extreme itself as it directs Azima's image towards the lowest perceived social position of a helpless woman.

@Crazy Kid No, she did not. The chosen words were very apt. Just because someone has done something before does not negate their right to subsequently refuse. A prostitute might agree to sex 999 times, but refuse the 1000th time. It would still be rape if she was forced after that refusal.

@Chooran Man "You cannot blame the men either"??? Ummm yes you can. ONLY the men are to blame. I don't care even if she is a professional dancer, druggie or whatever. You can not force anyone to do something they don't want. Even a pro danced has the right to say NO. Do you know what NO means? Sanams analogy is spot on. This is what she was trying to say.

@Crazy Kid Not really poor choice is words. It's apt. The analogy is spot on. Even a prostitute has the right to say NO. Even a stripper or mujra dancer has the right to say NO. Prole are already assuming that this poor woman brought this on herself because oh look drugs, dancing, has company etc. It's blue if a promiscuous girl says no to one guy, and he rapes her. It's not OK. She said NO. I think we as a society have so much to learn about consent.

@Ziyan such a pity at your thinking. Do you know how much human trafficking happens and how little girls are often sold and forced into prostitution? Try not to sit on a high horse making moral proclamations when you have not faced the heartbreaking realities the others have. Do you know of little boys and young men who get forced into prostitution and what horrors they have to endure? How can people like you ever justify violence against a weaker person in this way. You are implying that it is ok to rape a prostitute? You are saying it was ok for Asma to have been beaten just because some other day she had danced on some party?
