Coke Studio brings Allama Iqbal's poetry to life in their first episode

Natasha Baig joins forces with Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad Qawwal and brothers for a rendition of Shikwa/Jawab-e-Shikwa
Updated 10 Aug, 2018

Coke Studio season 11 kicks off with Allama Iqbal's poetry.

The first episode of the show is out and it features Natasha Baig with Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad Qawwal and brothers, performing 'Shikwa/Jawab-e-Shikwa'.

According to Coke Studio, this "unique rendition explores the genre of rock and the signature sound of qawwali in [a] one of a kind track."

Natasha Baig starts off the 13-minute track, performing 'Shikwa' to a pop-rock riff and we can't deny that her vocals are powerful. Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad Qawwal then take over 'Jawab-e-Shikwa' with their signature Qawwal style giving the Coke Studio touch. The track was composed by their father, the late Munshi Razi Uddin.

With this track opening season 11 of Coke Studio and knowing the roster ahead, we're excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us.

She sings good, and has done well with a difficult poem to sing. The first stanza has 4 Persian words (faramoosh, doosh, goosh, kamoosh) -Allama used them in Persian diction not urdu-so they should be pronounced properly with Persian vowel sounds rather than desi style.

pretty average as it has been sung in a disco style . Tina Sani has done full justice to it.

Coke studio can be pride of Pakistan such a bunch of talented people I cannot use any better word for them, combination of aiman and darbari raags so beautifully combined and reflections of Abida parveen and sabri brothers singing styles . So good so talented singers my hats off to them Bravo.

Vocals and poetry are somewhat lost in loud music beat.

@ajibolaal yes and when you fly to Britain or USA, make sure you speak English with their accent and pronunciation even though its NOT your mother tongue and not the "desi" style. Everyone is a critic i tell ya instead of enjoying the effort we all love to tell other's how our opinions are superior to what they have done.

From this song, does it even feel like what she is singing. Shikwa. Can not feel meanings from her voice, not sure even she is aware of what she is saying. Its very hard to represent thought of Allama iqbal in voice, this cacophony hardly doing any thing but some noice. Really not doing doing justice to the the poetry. Sorry to say.

I think that this qawalli required a more powerful female voice like Sanam Marvi.Anyways I am still satisfied with this performance.

@ajibolaal The words sukhan and dahan and nalah are also Persian, meaning speech, mouth and groan or complain respectively. As a purist, I don’t care for the rock fusion sound. Employing traditional instruments like the santoor, ney and rubab would have sounded better.

With what ease they sing simply mind blowing. High pitch n drop it to wisper add to it their own way of mixing lyrics , only Coke studio can do it.

Jawab e shikwa should have been sung by Rahat fateh ali khan. He would have done more justice.

@ajibolaal but these words are commonly used in Urdu. The only word which isn't a very common Urdu word is dosh. The other 3 are reasonably common. Plus, as long as she is able maintain the rhyme, metre and balance, I have no qualms!
