Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor are all the same to the BBC

It's painfully obvious that the BBC can't tell brown people apart
05 Dec, 2017

As news broke of the passing of Bollywood legend Shashi Kapoor, media around the world rushed to pay tribute to the late actor.

The actor's illustrious career is known to many; Deewar, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Aa Gale Lag Jaa are just some of his best titles.

But the BBC clearly isn't up to speed with Bollywood trivia.

In a video tribute to the actor on the evening news, the TV channel extolled Shashi's accomplishments while playing clips of Amitabh Bachchan from Kabhi Kabhi and Rishi Kapoor.

Don't believe us? See it for yourself:

Many think the mix-up is inexcusable:

The BBC News At Ten editor Paul Royall has since apologised for the blunder:

To white all brown people look a like. So BW using filters to make dusky artists fair ,not working, time to gonback to non filter filiming. Thus the fairness complex will stop messing up dusky Indians, insecurities ! BW needs to stop with love of fair skin,as the only symbol of beauty!

Shahsi Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor are brown people? Does BBC or Dawn even know their ancestry? Living in sub-continent does not make you automatically brown.

@N abidi In a nut shell, a sad day. Shashi sahaab was an adonis. Very few people know a hint about handsome.

Mita Moris: Rishi Kapoor is NOT Shashi Kapoor's 'brother'.. Rishi Kapoor is Raj Kapoor's son Who happens to be Shashi Kapoor's older brother, that makes Rishi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor's nephew.

The ignorance of BBC is amazing! After all, Shashi Kapoor was one of the actors of Shakespeareana, a group of artists who exclusively showed plays of Shakespeare. It is while working with this group he met the love of his life, Jennifer Kendal, who later married Shashi Kapoor, and became Jennifer Kapoor.

@Jawwad Please check your sources again. Living in the subcontinent, definitely does not make one brown, but ancestry does. Check their ancestors again.

Re: BBC's coverage of Shashi Kapoor's demise which has made ALL his admirers very sad indeed. Coming back to BBC's coverage of the news, it is regretable. Since, howeve r, Paul Royall has apologised for the mishap there is no point in much ado about this. One aspect of the matter, however, is that many a news which we take for granted, may be equally in doubt!

No need to get upset. Simply ignore it. It shows their way of informing the people, that how much they research before airing the information. But we must be more update about everything.

@Jawwad Being brown is not an insult. Please don't let complexes get in the way. Just because they're 'light brown' or 'peach brown' doesn't mean they're not brown lol. Its like a race. South Asian. Come on.
