Amir Khan's sexist take on household chores is the last thing we need

The boxer had a cringe-worthy moment on the show of I'm A Celebrity...

Boxer Amir Khan has had a number of cringe-worthy moments this past year, but nothing tops this.

Currently partaking in BBC's reality TV show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, Amir spoke about house chores and why he would never touch a dishwasher. And honestly, we're quite dumbstruck by his response.

The Pakistani-British boxer was conversing with another husband who said that he and his wife swap meal tasks when the other is working. Amir, on the other hand, responded with this gem: "I would never actually cook. In my culture, women, that's their job to do the cooking. They're best at cooking."

Unfortunately, it doesn't end there, Amir continued and said that there is a clear gender divide when it comes to household tasks.

"It's a man's job to actually do other jobs like the hard work, the hard labour jobs around the house."

The other husband was quick to jump in and counter his argument, stating that "doing housework is harder," and also took a dig at Amir saying, "Until you don't do it for yourself, you won't realise how hard that is."

The boxer replied, "I've got a dishwasher, washing machine, I've never actually known how to use these things. I would never touch those machinery, ever. You would turn into a woman. I'm a man. If I started dishwashing ---"

Even when a woman cut him and threw a rhetorical question at him, "If you use the machine, you would turn into a woman?", Amir responded with a, "Yeah."

It's deeply unsettling and surprising to hear that someone like Amir Khan, an icon for many, and also someone who has been born and raised abroad and seen equality among both genders, expressed views which are appalling and regressive to say the least.

It would hurt his huge male ego washing the dishes, it doesn't however offend him when he defames his wife for having an affair with another man on baseless grounds IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE WORLD!

You have hit the nail on the head. He is entitled to have his own opinion. If any one likes accept him with this view , if you don't like leave him. Nothing appalling or regressive to say the least. Respect, appreciate and thank each other for their respective roles in in this world as a man and women.

He is a good boxer and that is the full story. South Asian and Central Asian culture is more or less like this. I remember, the Japanese women used to pride themselves in even greater care of their men. He is not an activist or a deep thinking man. His own space is ok.

While we can cringe as much as we want but what he is saying is not of the normal. In my country, nay in South Asia, what he says is absolutely true. So blame not the Amir Khans of the world but the culture that produces such gems. Actually, he deserves the medal of telling it as it is unlike our so-called educated lot who talks in a very politically correct way yet employ underage maids.

What can you expect from someone who takes punches to the head for a living. Not a very bright person to begin with. All people in violent sports have to talk tough and dumb in order to maintain the persona.

The guy just stated the obvious - this is part of our society, whether you agree or not. Plus he is entitled to his opinion - there should not be any criticism to that

His views are abhorrent. In the West both partners share home chores. We do see some Pakistanis living in the West act like this but it is not the norm.

@Raja farhat Abbas Bless him...we all have the right to express freely as does AK. His problem is that despite being brought up in British society he has ideas which seem like a perfect match to culture in Pakistan village life. A person like him can become a good role model for those who idealise him by revealing good values. He should know that in the modern era men can be more manly if they are happily helping with the houseold chores like washing dishes.

He is a normal average person who is good at one sport and we have turned him into an Icon and when he says silly things which you can normally expect from some one from his educational and intellectual background, the Caucasians starts bashing Asian culture.

Not surprised at all. Just because he was born and raised in England doesn't mean that he would be taught well. There are hundreds of south asian men like him living abroad who feel the same. Sad state of the South Asian families. His views are totally in line with his actions, comments and dealings with his wife over the past 1-2 years. Poor to say the least.
