Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra's mother reveals how the actress faced sexist and predatory behaviour in her early years

While Hollywood is in turmoil since the Weinstein scandal, Bollywood's chosen to stay mostly mum on the subject of sexual harassment in the industry.

However, Priyanka Chopra's mother Madhu Chopra recently shed some light on the sexism Priyanka endured during her early years in Bollywood.

In her interview to Deccan Chronicle, Priyanka's mom revealed the former Miss World lost at least 10 films after refusing a project that was "being helmed by a reputed director".

Narrating the incident, Priyanka's mother claims "a reputed director" once insisted the actress wears "itsy-bitsy clothes".

"The director had said, 'What is the point of having a Miss World in front of the camera if we cannot show her as her beautiful self?' Priyanka refused to do the film," she said, claiming the director got upset and the Quantico star lost 10 films because she walked out of that project.

"But she didn't care. That is what I say to everyone. This is not the end of your life. Your life is more valuable."

Priyanka's mom appreciated how her daughter was treated in Hollywood

"They gave Priyanka a lot of respect. If you live on your own terms, the struggle is bigger but the outcome is sweeter too," she said.

It was a little problematic though as Dr Chopra implied getting harassed sexually or otherwise is a choice for women.

She says, "This is my advice to every girl. Do not compromise and life will be sweeter for you.”

Only if we were operating in black and whites, doctor sahiba!

Guys, are you for real? I'd suggest try to be a little less inspired by Buzzfeed. Not everything is problematic. Not everything is offensive. It's nothing but you guys reaching if I were to look at what the last few lines of the article say. Where did Madhu Chopra imply harrassment is a choice? It is a very positive message that she is landing. For women to want and seek out only the best for themselves. Be more responsible. Images has really started doing a lot of reaching lately.

Agree with Ms. Chopra. Priyanka showed moral courage by refusing films she did not feel right about. Personal conviction is what should matter ultimately.
