Upcoming film Azaadi puts the struggle for Kashmir on the big screen

The trailer of the film was released today on Kashmir Day
05 Feb, 2017

Upcoming film Azaadi tells the story of a man who sacrifices it all for the freedom of Kashmir and how his vision is carried forward by young people he inspires.

Starring Nadeem Baig, Moammar Rana and Sonya Hussayn, Azaadi will mark the directorial debut of Imran Malik, the son of veteran film producer/director Pervez Malik. Imran has also written the story while his brother Irfan Malik has produced the film.

"The film has elements of patriotism, a very powerful love story, some action scenes - a film has never been attempted on such a big canvas in Pakistan before," said Imran in conversation with Images.

Actor Sonya Hussayn also revealed that the film also conveys a strong message of women's empowerment.

"My character Zara is an independent journalist, who is [of] Pakistani [origin] but was born and brought up in the UK. She's outspoken, feisty and just a very empowered woman that many young girls will be able to relate to," she said in an earlier interview.

Azaadi is being shot by Australian cinematographer Ben Jasper (who also shot Hrithik Roshan-starrer Bang Bang) and features a soundtrack with music by Sahir Ali Bagga and tracks by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Quratulain Baloch and Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan.

The film will release this year.

Long overdue. Such movies should make it to international arena to highlight plight of kashmiris under indian brutal occupation.

Well done. That's how nations promote their national causes. I am sure this will be a very nice movie... much better than Indian poor rated Kashmir related movies.

An item number to make the movie work? Looking at the trailer it is surely a flop unless some masla scenes are added.

A movie about "Kashmir's Azaadi" featuring the PAKISTANI flag instead of the Azad Kashmiri flag, not a word of Kashmiri language, and not even one Kashmiri lead actor (Mirza Nazeer Baig = Mohajir, Moammar Rana = Punjabi, and Sonya Hussayn = Urdu speaking from Karachi). Producer even is Punjabi. What hypocrisy!

I do support Pakistani Cinema from the core of my heart but to be honest we need to get rid of these so-called Crappie Lollywood Stars. We need fresh blood and someone who could really fit in the needed character. Taking Shaan Shahid and Moammar Rana won't make any film a blockbuster, people are sick and tired of watching them on Big Screen, in fact they don't want any further. And on top they're not Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan or Amitabh Bachan that will people gush over to the theatres just because of the Huge Fan Following or Brand Power. So we actually need good educated people in our Film Industry, probably those who can understand how Marketing and Brand Management works, who can research, envision, strategize and pave the way of both Film Stars and Industry. P.S., We need to do Consumer Research, we need to understand our audience very well! What exactly they wanna see on Big Screen. In short we need to dig down deep! Very Deep!

Neither the actress nor the background scenario looks like kashmir, in the teaser. Very poor attempt.
