Mira Sethi will make her writing debut with a short story collection due out in 2018

The multi-talented actor's book has been picked up by publishing giants Knopf and Bloomsbury
Updated 05 Dec, 2016

We've seen Mira Sethi flourish as an actor this year, and as 2016 comes to an end, we hear that she's also taking great strides as a writer too!

Her debut collection of short stories has been picked up by publishing giants Knopf and Bloomsbury and is expected to release in the US, UK and India in 2018.

Mira, who's previously worked as a book editor at Wall Street Journal and has been published in The New York Times and The Caravan, is overjoyed by this new milestone in her career.

"When my agent sent out my manuscript, I was praying the editors at Knopf would glance at it," said Mira. "To think that Knopf — whose writers I have read and obsessed about since I was a teenager — is now my publisher is a dizzying dream-come-true. Ditto with Bloomsbury, who publish some of the best women's writing in the world. I am just so thrilled."

Mira's editors at Knopf describe her debut book as "a brilliant work that looks at life in Pakistan in a deeply human way with humour, intimacy, compassion, and verisimilitude."

"Mira's stories upend traditional notions of identity and family in South Asia through deeply realized portraits of characters one comes to know and to care for," they added.

Way to go, Mira! Here's to a fabulous debut.

I have followed Mira Sethi ever since she delivered a noteworthy, poignant, and hilarious speech at the Student Commencement Speech at Wellesley College, USA on May 28, 2010, and I am an ardent follower of the writings and the Aapas Ki Baat TV news shows of her father the eminently respected Najam Sethi. I wish her all success in her new endeavor. All the best Mira. Khub falo, fulo aur mauj karo but stay humble. Hamesha yaad rakhna "Aam ka ped jab falon se lad jaata hai to woh zameen ki or jhook jaataa hai."

She really has no acting talent. I find her performances to be camera conscious and stiff, and totally unrealistic. Hope her writing skills are better.

When I watched on the television your speech at the Wellsely College function, I was delighted to see a Pakistani girl making such a great impression on the US audience. I suspected then that you might be the daughter of Najam Sethi and Jugnu Sethi. I said to myself that the Sethis had done an excellent job of sending you to the US for studies. Then a couple of years ago I saw you on a show you saying that you were interested in acting and wanted to pursue that career. Then I saw you in a tv drama, Jhoot. Your performance was fabulous but I didn't know until then it was Mira Sethi. I am very pleased and delighted to see you progress in your chosen field and I wish you all the very best. Hearty congratulations to you and to your parents.

Pakistan has equal opportunities for everyone only if your family has connections . Talents is in abundance only in those few else Pakistanis are a bunch of uneducated and ill mannered lot. This is Pakistan.

@Zia Although there is a lot of truth in what you say, and yes being well connected does give you a big edge in all phases and arenas of life, unfortunately, these are the facts of life and the day to day realities encountered by those who are not so fortunate, and have to endeavor against frightful odds. Being born well, and given all the advantages of wealth like a good atmosphere, best schools, good health, travel, vacations, definitely helps in catapulting one to the forefront and yet look at The PM of the neighboring country of India, much like Pakistan in many ways Mr. Narendra Modi, who had none of these advantages, started life as a minuscule railway station chaiwala's son, and yet rose to be the world leader he is today, against all odds. President Obama's meteoric rise to the helm of the planet is another example Of perseverance trumping good, fortune and good pedigree.
