Indian film association bans Pakistani talent from working in India

The association makes an exception for Pakistani artistes already engaged in upcoming projects

In a latest development on the cultural front of Pak-India tensions, the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) has “banned” Pakistani actors, singers and technicians from working in India till “normalcy” returns, ANI reported.

This resolution was passed during the annual general meeting of the association this evening, reports The Quint.

"We’ve passed this decision in the AGM today on the demand of all the producers. Henceforth, till the situation is ok between the Pakistani and Indian governments, we will not hire any Pakistani artist, technician or singer. [...] We will maintain this till the relations between Pakistan and India are ok. The AGM at IMPPA House in Mumbai was attended by more than 200 film producers," said TP Aggarwal, President of IMPPA.

The association's resolution comes in the wake of the 48-hour deadline to leave India given by nationalist party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which threatened consequences if Fawad and other Pakistani artistes in India did not comply. While no prominent Pakistani artiste is in India at the moment, upcoming concerts of Shafqat Amanat Ali and Atif Aslam have been cancelled.

However, the association has made an exception for Pakistani artistes already engaged in upcoming projects:

"If there’s any ongoing project from which [Pakistani artistes] cannot be removed now, on which everything has been done, they can come for that," Aggarwal also said.

This puts in the clear films like Fawad Khan-starrer Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Mahira Khan-starrer Raees. Both films' producers were being pressurised by the MNS to remove the scenes featuring the Pakistani actors.

IMPPA, however, is insistent that no further talent from Pakistan is hired until normalcy returns.

"IMPPA in its AGM paid homage to the martyrs who were killed in Uri. It therefore felt its responsibility towards the nation and passed a resolution banning Pakistani actors & technicians in India till normalcy returns. For IMPPA nation comes first, " said Ashoke Pandit, Vice President of IMPPA.

The Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association, popularly know as IMPPA, is the first and the only internationally recognised association of the Indian film production sector. It is the original mother organisation and all other associations which exist now are the offshoots of IMPPA, according to its website.

Thank you IMPPA for this long due gesture. They have long taken our large heartedness for granted. We needed to stand united against them to give them a piece of our mind. We love normal Pakistanis as they were once our own people, but given the security scenario and given that the same people change their colors as soon as they are back to Pakistan, we had to bar them from using us as a ladder for their career.

Pakistan needs to stand up to this. At the moment all talk and action is coming from India. Pakistan needs to put a stop to all India related music, videos and dramas. Off topic Pakistan hopefully realises it is important to step up in every aspect from dams, politics, health, education, zero corruption etc otherwise our existence is at risk.

Again, the same rhetoric and the usual economic factors involved in this deplorable decision. Why are they against Pakistani talent? Are they afraid of a stiff competition from the real talent, especially because their indigenous so-called pool of talent is devoid of any real potential of a long-term sustainability in the filmdom (except, maybe, for the Khans)? A cosmopolitan country........no way! Their (undesirable) characteristic of being intolerant towards Pakistanis iss evident for the world to see. Wake up IMPPA and stop acting childishly in today's age and time.

Dr. Subhash Chandra of Zee Zindagi told NDTV today that they had asked and requested all the Pak artists to condemn the attack on sleeping soldiers but nobody did it. He even said don't name the country, just simply condemn, but they still refused. This is surprising. I wish the news was wrong. Now what you expect from Indian public and institutions. Still love and praise ? Is this gesture acceptable ?

@Amrita By the way, what are you doing on a Pakistani newspaper website?! ... You "wanted" that long due gesture and as per you, we have taken your large-heartedness "for granted", YET YOU ARE ON A PAKISTANI NEWSPAPER WEBSITE ... It speaks volumes. Doesn't it? Secondly, if you had even a little knowledge of media work, you would have known much better that your producers/directors "watched" Pakistani artistes' work, liked it and only after when they were 100% sure that there was "no replacement" available in India, they took them in their movies. So, there is no case of "using you hypocrites" as ladder. So ... what appears that "you are at a Pakistani forum despite the fact you don't like us" and "you speak about topics about which you don't have a slightest clue", ... lady ... YOU AREN'T SURE EVEN ABOUT YOURSELF THAT WHAT YOU WANT! ...

@FAHAD ADNAN you have said what I have been telling all the Indian readers. I mean they have so much time that they come to read our newspaper all the time. Not just that, look how many people actually come here to recommend such comments. All confused.

@md How was Pakistani cinema recovering because of Indian movies? recent Pakistani movies are much stronger and better compared to Bollywood movies. No doubt Bollywood movies have start power but as far as film direction is concered Pakistani films are better.
