7 reasons why Doraemon is a threat to Pakistan

7 reasons why Doraemon is a threat to Pakistan

Finally, we understand the purpose behind PTI's request for a ban.
Updated 28 Oct, 2019

If you have kids, be they your own or those that you babysit, you're familiar with Doraemon.

Doraemon is a Japanese anime character; specifically, a robot sent back in time to help better the life of a man named Nobita. The two form a close bond and every episode sees Nobita with a new problem and Doraemon with a new gadget to help him solve it.

When Disney bought the rights to Doraemon, perhaps they did so with the intention of playing nothing but Doraemon on their channel. At least, that's what it feels like. The channel airs back-to-back episodes of the show, and children just keep lapping up scenes of the witty Doraemon helping Nobita.

But is that all there is to this show? With the latest proposal by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf to ban Doraemon, we have finally started to understand that this show is not innocent at all. It could lead to (more) utter chaos in the country.

We bring to you all the ways Doraemon is a big threat to our society.

1) Doraemon is a problem solver

He has a gizmo to solve every problem!
He has a gizmo to solve every problem!

Exposure to characters like Doraemon could have kids believing that whenever they encounter a problem... they might just be able to fix it!

Yes, we can't have our children develop into critical thinkers. They might just grow up and find ways to battle extremism, or... corruption.

The best solution is to ban any cartoon that negates the inertia we've become accustomed to.

2) Doraemon's little sister is stronger than him

Dorami
Dorami

A positive role model for girls watching at home, gasp!

Dorami instills dangerous ideas like 'women can be just as strong as or stronger than men' in the minds of our sweet innocent children. Can you imagine the revolution that could take place in Pakistan!?

We already have women reclaiming public spaces, we can't risk it any further. Lives are at stake here! Think of your families!

3) Doraemon was originally yellow

And had ears! What is this trickery!?
And had ears! What is this trickery!?

This is a disguise! This character is definitely a spy. How can we trust a creature that changes its colour? This just tells children that it's okay to change yourself and your looks!

Tabdeeli? Who wants that?

4) Nobita is just a kid wanting to enjoy his childhood

What's up with that?
What's up with that?

This Nobita character is a very troublesome fellow. He skips chores, doesn't want to study, and behaves like a regular nine-year-old.

Doesn't he realise that a life of toil and struggling for basic needs awaits him? How will he survive? How will the country progress?

If kids realise they are supposed to enjoy their youth, it's the end of life as we know it!

5) Doraemon is a robot

Oh no! Scientific advancement! The horror!
Oh no! Scientific advancement! The horror!

The problem with a cartoon featuring a robot as a hero is that it might just convince us technology is a force for good.

In a country where polio vaccines are shunned and so is contraception, where Amazon doesn't deliver and Paypal isn't a thing yet... where a certain public figure don't even want women to drive... surely technology must be demonized, right?

Down with Doraemon! Down with robots! They'll definitely spread discontent.

6) Doraeman is an icon

It's EVERYWHERE
It's EVERYWHERE

People love Doraemon. A lot. There's merchandise of it everywhere.

But what about our icons? What about Commander Safeguard? That guy kills germs! And the Knorr Noodle gang? There's food involved there!

We have our own culture of soap-men and noodle eaters and they are losing the attention to this cute little feline robot that fulfills children's dreams. Our own history will be lost; I mean it's not like we can create content that children will like. Ain't nobody got time for that! Doraemon must be destroyed!

And most importantly...

7) The theme song is too catchy

Make it stop, please just make it stop!
Make it stop, please just make it stop!

If you ever baby sat children, you may hear this song. You'll know it's the song because it will be stuck in your head long after the kids have left and in the wee hours of the night, you'll be humming it.

The sensitive delicate ears of our little ones will start preferring this to all the modern music we have to offer. Kids won't be listening to Billi, Butter Jawani or Chikni Chameli!

This theme song, with no adult themes or swear words, won't allow our kids to mature the way they should.

Same things are in Tom & jerry, superman, powerpuf girls etc. we ban them as well? regarding explosions every cartoon shows explosions specially Tom and jerry and power girls, superman. The thing is that PTI knows tthat all children are occupying the cartoon network and Doramon is most favourite and so elders are not getting time to watch news channels and hence PTI dramas. PTI needs media coverage and are willing to sacrifice children joy for that. Such a pathetic move and everyone knows that. double the time of Doramon.

The writer of this article probably hasn't watched "Doraemon" at least the version showed on "Disney" India , otherwise the first point would have applied to his/herself (problem solver/critical thinker) considering the outcome of "Doraemon" is children running around speaking/using "Hindi" words instead of "Urdu" eg. wow yeh candy toh bahut swadisht hai instead of mazeydar or "mujhey kaal sapna aya tha" instead of khuwaab.. list is a bit too long to be shared here A tip for writing satire...... read up our/your very own Nadeem F Piracha or maybe wirte about how delusional our Govt is, claiming we have paid off our debts to IMF

Hilarious write up. Though I tell my kid to not watch Doraemon for a couple of reasons .....that the lead Nobitha is a nonsense kid who cheats in exams and doesnt study. Secondly, Nobitha a 9 year old is continuously shown in love with a girl and trying to pursue her. Obviously, this is a very polluting thing for a young mind. Anyhow, there are worse things on TV including our very own home made shows (including a Eunuch hosting a night show). So Doraemon for now is not an issue, not at all.

Seems like the writer hasnt watched Doraemon cartoons really. Nobita is a child who doesnt do any home work and doesnt study at all and flunks tests all the time and instead of trying to solve it by studying, he relies on gadgets to get his issues resolved. Also, Nobita often lies to his parents and rarely gets caught as doaremon comes to his rescue with gadgets. Worst thing is that it is shown in Hindi instead of Urdu in Pakistan which is destroying the urdu language skills of kids

Hahaha... what a beautiful piece of script. I am sure anyone here who have kids and can find time to actually pay attention to what their children are doing or watching on media should very well know what the cartoons or poems or even jingles are all about. Children have beautiful creative and brilliant brains and they not only get fun by watching the colorful characters in the shows but they pick those messages/morals which we as parents do not notice much because we are too busy with world or our own and we are satisfied with the reason we are giving time to kids by sitting next to them BUT on either laptops/mobiles/iPad or TV box! Children adopt a lot from what they visually capture.

Personally the biggest problem with this cartoon is that language kids picking is entirely not appreciable. The concept of learning Urdu is fading. We as adults do not even realize that when was the last time we write our names or even a full line in URDU language without a problem in Imla. Believe you me its not about Hindi/English but we are losing our own identity.

@Salman i think your the one who hasnt watched the cartoon yet you said it teaches people to being lazy and use gadgets to do your work. Only if he had concentrated throughout the show. He would realize that nobita never succeeds by using his gadgets. The outcome is always contrary to what he wants. Hence, the cartoon is rather an accurate depiction of what happens if you abuse luxuries.

If you find someone using these words, just correct them; as simple as that. I'm just surprised some ignorant parents are actually on board with this. Explicitly mentioning Doraemon for banning is a childish move by PTI. But I think Hindi-dubbed cartoons should be banned. It is not that I am anti-Indian or anti-Hindi, it is because one should preserve their respective culture and languages which is considered part of someone's identity. World is turning into a global village (with the use of advanced technologies) and regional languages are becoming obsolete day by day. According to a report as many as half of the world's 7,000 languages are expected to be extinct by the end of this century and it is estimated that one language dies out every 14 days. It is quite an alarming situation in a soceity where parents feel pride in making their children forget their first language, instead try to focus on other languages. If India is dubbing Japanese cartoons in Hindi to promote Hindi in upbringing of their children then why can't Pakistan dub the same cartoons in Urdu to preserve our national language in our younger generations. #SaveUrdu #Save.your.Identity #Save.UR.Nationality

@Imran Dear Mr. Imran, I think that you haven't read any urdu literature. You should know that the words like "Sapna", "Swadisht" and other hindi words have also been included in their works by our literary giants of Urdu Language. Plus, "Samosa", "Pakorra", "Jalebi" , "Amrati" etc are also hindi words, but we use them continually. Does it mean that we put a ban on them? Ultimately, Urdu language has the power to grab every suitable word from the languages like Hindi, Sansikrit, English, Persian, Turkish etc. Thats why, it is called URDU!

@Sahil Singh Bhar the word "sawdisht" means "delicious" and not "tasteful" which translates to zikeydar... or perhaps could be considered as a synonym guess some one needs to do their looking up properly

@Satyameva Jayate urdu was derived from Arabic, Persian,Turkish and Hindi but the funny bit mate is I don't hear any of the 4 above in Hindi so my point stands these are two different languages representing 2 cultures with a different back ground.

It is very dangerous for oyr kids to watch doraemon cuz its poluting their minds. Nobita is in love with shuzuka and he is always trying to see her naked , and always ends up in her bath tub or her bathroom when she is taking a bath and he does this with the help of doraemon's gadgets. In one episode, he enters her bedroom when she is not there, and he kisses her pillow uttering "shuzuka shuzuka" this pillow smells like shuzuka. I mean this kind of nonsense is shown in this show, negating our social, religious and moral values

I watched a Doraemon show and realized it has more Urdu words than Hindi. One entire episode that I watched was about 'jannat'! It should be Indians who should object, but then we are not so intolerant.

@Deepak Panwar Yes URDU is ours! And that's a very widely understandable language. Most of the poetry has also been written in this language. A well civilized language. Yes! And its Yours too! :-)

@Ravi Vancouver Problem is that the kids are learning the language that is not their national language. If any one want to learn any language including Hindi so any one can learn it after learning own national language. Cartoons are suitable for kids of Pakistan in either Urdu or English.

@Hassan Parvez Nice thinking of yours but the friction part is that the kids are starting to speak out the language that is not national. I say that kids can learn many languages (even hindi) but after learning & speaking their national language first!

First of all the people here who think the Comic series is in pure Hindi they are wrong. The dubbing is a mix of Hindi Urdu words and that's the confusing part. No one encourage a mix of a language how odd it feels when you mix English with Urdu by saying, " Today to main Mango khaoo'n ga", similarly, Mixing Pure Hindi Words into Urdu also seems awkward like, " Main Aasha (Umeed) karta hoon kay tum apni raksha(Hifazat) karna khud seekho". This sentence sounds quite hilarious if we purely take it in context of Urdu sentence. Hence the problem is not Hindi or any language but the mixture of different languages specially when you got totally replaceable and better words in your own language. Another reality is that Indians have more variety of languages that's why more adaptable than Pakistanis.
