Sharmeen Obaid wins second Oscar award, makes Pakistan proud

The filmmaker won for her documentary A Girl in the River, which sheds light on honour killing in Pakistan
Updated 29 Feb, 2016

Just minutes ago Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy made history as the only Pakistani to win two Oscar awards.

Sharmeen was awarded the Oscar in the category Best Documentary - Short Subject for her documentary A Girl in the River, which follows the life of an 18-year-old girl who is a survivor of an honour killing attempt.

Wearing a floor-length black Sana Safinaz coat over a matching dress, Sharmeen had earlier walked the red carpet with her mother and the SOC Films team.

"I have another one!" said Sharmeen as she took the stage to accept the award, her second after she won an Academy Award for Saving Face in 2012.

“This is what happens when determined women get together," continued Sharmeen. "From Saba, the girl in my film who remarkably survived honor killing and shared her story, to Sheila Nevins, Lisa Heller from HBO and Tina Brown who supported me from day one. To the men who champion women, like Geof Bartz who has edited the film to Asad Faruqi, to my friend Ziad who brought this film to the government, to all the brave men out there like my father and husband who push women to go to school and work and who want a more just society for women!"

"This week the Pakistani PM said he would change the law on honor killing after watching this film -- that is the power of film!" said Sharmeen in closing.

Sharmeen has been in Los Angeles for the past week in preparation for the Academy Awards, arguably Hollywood's biggest night of the year. Sharmeen had previously said that while she was excited by the prospect of winning another Oscar, she would consider her work on the documentary a 'real' success if she managed to help convince stakeholders to pass the Anti-Honour Killing bill.

Sharmeen definitely caught the government's attention with A Girl in the River -- the film was screened at the PM House in Islamabad just last week. Following that, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that honour killing was a critical issue and voiced his government’s determination to eradicate this practice from society.

Just a few hours before her win Sharmeen had stated in a Facebook post: "In just a few hours the team of A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness will walk the red carpet at the Oscars! Whether we win or lose today we should be very proud of the fact that this film has ignited a national discourse about honor killings in Pakistan and has spurred the government to work on tougher legislation! That achievement shows that we are maturing as a democracy and today I'm so very honored and humbled that we have been able to move the needle on this issue."

Sharmeen has gone a long way to make Pakistan proud.

I am a professional working since last 10 years in different part of the world including middle east and the west. Based on my personal experience, i can say these things doesn't mean any thing for Pakistan or Pakistani Peoples. Nations are recognized by their systems, justice, education etc... It is very commonly said in our country that these activities will project "soft" image of Pakistan. I don't understand what this soft image is? Can this bring Justice to our system? Can corrupt politicians will be brought before the law? Answer is no!, so keep winning these awards, good luck!

No I am not happy...Sorry ! All documentaries she makes highlight the negative facet of Pakistan, even those issues which you would rarely encounter in Pakistan. Be sure ! bad people and bad traditions are prevalent everywhere in the world. She isn't making any difference except portraying poor image of Pakistan. I urge her to make documentaries of great people of Pakistan, you may even find them in far flung remote villages where you often go and highlight microscopic issue and generalize it in way which shows that whole Pakistan is infected with this issue. That's my opinion and other people have right of disagree, since I am a citizen of free country. Pakistan Zindabad !

Sharmeen Obaid Chenoy a brave lady in close society of Pakistan did two courageous steps one in 2012 won Oscar for acid throwing faces, and now " A Girl in the River for honor killing prevalent all over Muslims' countries of the world. She has delivered the message to those people uncomfortable to think seriously for human's values and act upon not for the sake of popularity but humanity service. She is proud lady of close society of Pakistan, giving message of Quiad--father of nation that liberalism and secularism is the need of the time to rid from all kinds of adversaries--extremism, terrorism and those customs which are lethal for women in Pakistan.

They are equal to men and deserve equal rights. It is not liberalism as some Maulanas have said. Our religion Islam requires a women to give an affirmative answer for marriage/nikkah. How can father or brothers take away that right. God bless you.

Also, her documentary highlights the quick response of rescue workers, the attention paid to the case by the police and the amazing skill of the doctors who worked on the victim. Congratulations to Sharmeen on winning this award. But realistically, this award has nothing to do with Pakistan. It was Sharmeen, who worked hard to make the film and exposed the problem of honor killing. We Pakistanis always want to take credit for Pakistan if someone does good. Out of 180 million people, when we hear one did good, we get proud. Please learn from those who are doing great work and try to copy them and do something worthwhile. Just living and bragging about others accomplishments will get you nowhere. Hard work will always be rewarded. Finally, again congratulations to Sharmeen for a well deserved award.

Great. There is a great schism in the world about values, about life, about what is good and what is bad, it may seem ridiculous but many in the world have other ideas about what is good and bad. Many in the world and many in Pakistan think that what Ms. Chinoy did was wrong, very very wrong, and the numbers are not small, they are in the millions. This is the real frightening prospect of knowing that there are so many among fellow citizens who think otherwise. They not only think otherwise but put into practice what they think. That indeed is a very frightening prospect. So this is why Sharmeen is indeed a very brave soul to have made this movie, knowing the dangers.

@Sam --- it is only through reflection, examination, ability to criticize oneself and then to make corrections that you are able to improve yourself as a human being. Same goes for nations. There is no shame in acknowledging your flaws and trying to do something to fix them. There is no honor or "Saving Face" in ignoring or hiding them. The mindset that makes you think of Sharmeen as bringing shame and disgrace to Pakistan with her exposé of the ills of our society is not too dissimilar than the one that, under different circumstances, justifies honor killings--"Pagri di izzat"

Pakistan is generally a moderate cultural society which already have the capacity to absorb new ideas and lifestyle cultures and rapidly transforming capabilities in our society......due to this different persons attempt different topics for change....definitely those topics which are more acceptable and appealling to wetern civilization are awarded and in this way they create their icons in this society....and the society changes according the will of that civilization along with giving bad name to domestic moderate society

@Ahmed People either run away from problems facing their home or prefer to stay quiet about social issues creating injustices and problems facing Pakistan's society. If some one gets courage and highlight the problems in society like Sharmeen and Malala, some people feel threatened and find it uncomfortable because issues are highlighted internationally and domestically. If you can not improve society at least appreciate people trying to highlight the problems so that they are identified and first step to solve them has been taken by somebody.
