India reacts to Sonam Kapoor's role in Neerja, and it's not all good

Neerja's former co-workers are now claiming that "even her soul would cringe at taking this undeserved adulation."

If box office numbers and critics are to be believed, Sonam Kapoor has given the performance of her career in Neerja.

The movie is about slain flight attendant Neerja Bhanot, who sacrificed her life in 1986 to save over 300 passengers from terrorists who hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi.

Neerja has faced it's fair share of hurdles from the get go; first, film wasn't allowed to be screened in Pakistan, and then Neerja's colleague, Nupoor Abrol has allegedly come out to say that the movie has taken far too many liberties from what actually happened on that tragic day.

According to an Indian website, Miss Malini, Neerja's former co-workers are now claiming that "even her soul would cringe at taking this undeserved adulation."

However, not all received the movie in a negative light. Neerja's classmates lauded the movie and thanked Sonam for playing her beautifully.

They even made her a classmate!

Neerja Bhanot's family was touched with the way the biopic was made. Her brother, Akhil, stated: "People should know about her and her bravery. There couldn’t have been a better way than cinema and the whole thing has been done so beautifully that our entire family is overwhelmed. It wasn’t Sonam on the screen. All we watched throughout was Neerja! What a brilliant job she has done."

"People who were born after 1986 had forgotten about Neerja and what she did on that day...now they won't, all thanks to the film."

Talking about family, Sonam's father, Anil Kapoor did what dads do best after her performance got great reviews: he tried to keep her feet on the ground and make sure his daughter remains humble.

"No matter how much praise she gets for her performance and whatever anyone says, she still has to improve more and more," said Kapoor.

Neerja hit theatres on February 19.

I think it is a decent and honorable expression of a story worth remembering and recalling. Very clever direction. Never made Neerja look like a super women which any lesser director would have easily done. Why no screening in Pakistan? The movie has projected Pakistan authorities as a very sincere lot who were genuinely trying to handle and solve a very tricky situation. As for the remarks of the other crew members, were they the last to leave the plane? Wasn't Neerja the head purser, their leader? Who warned the cockpit crew first? Bravery committed even at the spur of the moment while overlooking self interest is commendable by all means. Neerja needs to be celebrated as the daughter of the subcontinent!

There is not one comment against Pakistan. Strange why Pakistan has not allowed the screening. It is difficult to make a film interesting when the story is so straight and the audience know what is ultimately going to happen. But the director has done a superbly admirable job. Also, they have captured the 1980s atmosphere so well. Hats Off!

Screen play is poor, and unnecessary added songs with no melody.

It is surprising that, Indian nation had forgotten its most humane and brave young lady Neerja! She should have been made a permanent feature to be introduced suitably in the courses of school studies, so as to immortalize her great sacrifice. Pakistan should have also awarded her appropriately. That was noble service to humanity and must be made a glowing example for the entire humanity.

The screening is banned because of indian film industry's obsession of showing Pakistan or Pakistanis in a negative light - namely showing that Pakistani passengers contributed to worsen the situation, which is simply not true.

We should get out of the habit of banning Indian movies. Our audience is smart and well versed, so there should be no restrictions imposed. Movies are just movies and the people should have choices in terms of choosing entertainment options without government's involvement. If there is some sort of propaganda, then people will see through it

@Sam What makes you say that Pakistani passengers made the situation worse? I saw the movie yesterday and did not observe any scene which makes me come to your conclusion.

There is nothing negative about Pakistan in the movie.....May be authorities in Pakistan are feeling guilty of letting off the hijackers with lighter sentences. One hijacker was caught in Thailand by FBI and now serving sentence in US prison

It is no surprise that this movie has improvised on reality to support the fantasies of its Indian audience. I am yet to see an Indian movie doing justice to history.

Soam's facial expression in the title photo above are so terrible. It looks as if she is trying to say "instead of killing me, Would you please marry me?" to the terrorist.

The movie has flaws that needs to be address : 1- The pilots run away when the hijacking happened is not correct. 2- The security is informing the hijackers that a communication technician is in the plane , and also providing his name . this is also not correct. 3- The movie is about presenting a Indian hero out of tragedy , same like Airlift.

@wasi - the pilots are supposed to leave In this kind of situation so the plane doesn't leave the runway.. If the pilots stayed, they'd be forced to fly the plane which is what the hijackers wanted . Neerja was the first one to warn them so they can escape from thier overhead exit.

@Thoroughthinker " Pakistan should have also awarded her appropriately." Pakistan did award her the "Tamgaa-e-Pakistan" for saving several Pakistanis among the 359 passengers saved - maybe she deserved a higher honor. Unfortunately, about thirty passengers including 2 Americans and Neerja herself were killed.

@Aslan The main topic is not supposed to be either terrorism or Pakistan. It is to celebrate the life and death of one Neerja Bharnot. And quite rightfully so.

@Aslan When we say "Lollywood" seems we are having a Lollypop. Its kind of chippy name, I urge Pakistan film Industry to go with some other nice name.
