Mahira Khan reunites with Shoaib Mansoor for a tribute to all brides-to-be

Short 'Dua-e-Reem' shows a unique take on Allama Iqbal's iconic poetry Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua.

Shoaib Mansoor has reunited with Mahira Khan for a tribute to women on International Women's Day.

The duo recreated and refreshed Allama Iqbal's iconic poetry for short Dua-e-Reem, showing a time in the pre-Partition era when the words to 'Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua' were changed to a song for a new bride. And they were not pretty.

The video shows professional singers performing the revamped track which glorifies abuse by husbands and is depicted as a prayer for women to stay complicit through the violence.

Problematic lyrics include "I should feel blessed it was just a threat, and not slap - and if it was a slap, I should be grateful it was not a shoe."

Khan, playing the bride-to-be, is enraged by the lyrics along with the notion of blatant submission to her husband and decides to perform her own version with lyrics implying her love for her husband is as a wife, not a slave or a servant. After all, a husband and wife are partners.

Most women will hate the first part by the old lady. Aurat Marchers will hate the last stanza, celebrating love.

Thanks Mahira and Shoaib for bringing this up in the right way. Yes a wife is a life partner and PK society must recognize that. The law must protect all women from abuse by husbands.

It's difficult to gauge who is more nihilistic, the earlier Right wingers or the current left leaning ideologues

Problematic lyrics? Or just accurate depiction of societal indoctrination of most females. Be grateful. Hey at least he didnt kill you. Ita sad because all men are not bad or misogynists, but decent gentlemen, but the bad ignorant men shout the loudest and have dragged the Pakistani man's image and reputation through the mudd. Mothers AND fathers, raise your sons right and stop raising your daughters as inferior beings who must be grateful for what they are naturally entitled to. Dignity and respect.

This is one of the most disgraceful renditions of Iqbal's poetry that I have ever had the misfortune of witnessing. Crass and totally devoid of class. Its not about men or women its the ability to put forth your point of view in a manner that is appealing and convincing. And to do that with Iqbal's literature is rather disappointing.

It's not very good to be honest. Seems like something made in the 90's.

This song is a complete farce, first off at no time in the sub continent’s history were such prayers or wishes sent a bride’s way. It Is a very serious subject and the song has given a comic twist to it. Very unfortunate!

Its highly mesmerizing. I think it is the best time when Shoaib Mansoor has released this song. It defines all about patriarchy and solution of all problems as well.

Why did they choose to make a spin off of Iqbal’s poem?
