Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae will be going on a wild, romantic ride to solve a murder in upcoming flick, The Lovebirds.
The two co-stars tweeted out the trailer on Thursday:
The teaser shows the pair falling in love and doing all the usual rom-com things; walking through a park, sipping milkshakes, the first 'I love you'. But all that is abruptly interrupted when a cyclist slams into their car and they're sucked into a murder mystery to clear their names.
As their journey to find the real culprit takes them from one extreme — and hilarious — circumstance to the next, they must figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.
According to Rae, the movie was initially written with white actors in mind.
"It's not a story about race but we wanted to acknowledge our race and the fact that we're an interracial couple," she added. Can we just say, it warms our heart to see two people of colour as the leads in a mainstream rom-com.
Directed by Michael Showalter (who reunites with Nanjiani after directing him in The Big Sick), The Lovebirds will be out on April 3.
