Faisal Vawda endorsing vigilante justice is what's wrong with our system

"If we hung 5000 people right now... the fate of millions of people would change," said the PTI minister
13 Jun, 2019

In a recent appearance on Hamid Mir's talk show Capital Talk PTI minister Faisal Vawda made some problematic comments which were quickly caught by people on social media.

During a wide-ranging discussion on subjects that included the 2019 budget, the economy, corruption and the recent arrests of Asif Ali Zardari and Hamza Shahbaz, the minister said: "If we hung 5000 people right now - if it was in our hands - the fate of millions of people would change. But it's not in our hands."

At this, fellow panelist and PML-N politician Khurram Dastgir Khan said: "He [Faisal Vawda] has turned out to be a fascist. Wanting to hang 5000 people is fascism. I object to this."

When host Hamid Mir suggested that those people be tried according to the law, Vawda replied: "If we wait for law and justice to be served 20 generations will pass us by."

While some may say that Vawda made this statement in an offhand manner, it points to a very real disregard for the rule of law, which is actually at odds with what his political party has endorsed in the past.

And even if this was a statement made 'casually,' isn't it true that elected representatives ought to be more careful of the messages they send in public?

What with Pakistan's struggle to account for missing persons and to actually bring perpetrators of crimes to justice, disregarding the rule of law is a very dangerous precedent, and others think so too:

This a classic case of making mountain out of a molehill. One editorial plus this report may be all the other issues are gone by some magic, but wait a minute, they were there when i last time checked.

I would rather talk a out justice for the poor, the uneducated, the many living in rural areas, the middle class-everybody who goes through huma rights violations committed by our unjust and corrupt system. Because you see, those groups have more than enough incentive to go vigilante on their powerful and rich abusers. I however have no sympathy for zardari, Sharifs etc. Your time is up. Off to jail you go.

There is no rule and law in Pakistan. The rule and law is only for poor. Shahbaz Sharif was caught talking and threatening a sitting Judge of Lahore High Court and he went on to become CM of the largest province 2 more times. Who has an iota of doubt in Zardariz corruption but he was your president.. where is the Law and who has made it so?? Vawda is totally right that we need to change the laws in a way that will help the state go hang a few to send a clear message of enough is enough.

No doubt what Faisal Vawda said, is a common dialogue and phrase talk of the tea dhabas or even in expensive drawing rooms. But Pak is not an autocratic kingdom, people can’t be hanged this way. A process of law, judiciary is there. And accordingly it’s working. Faisal Vawda must not be impatient, and let the institutions work in smooth manner.

Its about time we started punishing the guilty. Pakistani courts are notorious for taking a long time in meeting justice. It is time that vigilantes came out and punished the guilty. Perhaps some innocent will also get killed so be it.

I like the idea as long as he has included himself and his corrupt and opportunist PTI comrades. Let's make Pakistani Tehreek Insaaf a Pure, Truthful and Imaginative party. It is doable as the PTI has the person on the top who is Pure, Truthful and Imaginative.

@Bhaijan, in the name of institutions, democracy and law, our politicians and elite class has taken enough advantage. We all know what is the condition of all these institutions, democracy and law. Enough is enough. About time. I think F. Wawda has missed one zero.

Mr. Fawda, who loves to be in the media limelight and most of the time for wrong reasons, must understand that by supporting vigilante justice and uttering such repugnant and appalling remarks, he is desecrating that oath which he took as a legislator to protect and preserve the constitution of this country. My only request to all enlightened and educated lot of this country is; This must never be allowed to happen...... Be vigilant about your rights. Care about the rights and human dignity of others. When the rights of any group, no matter how small, no matter how marginal, are violated, your liberty, your freedom is put at risk. Let there never be a day when we cast about in horror and have to ask the question, "How did it ever come to this?"
