'May God bless her soul as he blessed her pen': Writer Fahmida Riaz mourned by admirers

The writer and activist passed away in Lahore after a long period of illness yesterday

Fahmida Riaz, one of Pakistan's foremost feminist writers, passed away after a prolonged illness in Lahore yesterday. She was 72.

While she was known for speaking up for the rights of the downtrodden in her writings, Riaz's contribution to literature also include her work as a translator and educationist.

She will be greatly missed — and her admirers did their best to encapsulate what her work meant to them:

Writer Fahmida Riaz visited the stranded Biharis at Geneva camp ('Geneva basti') in Dhaka, Bangladesh and wrote about their sufferings.

In her death, we have lost yet another liberal soul in Pakistan. The other great loss in the recent past was that of Asma Jehangir.
