5 ridiculous responses to female PIA pilots flying to Gilgit

5 ridiculous responses to female PIA pilots flying to Gilgit

These people are taking misogyny to new heights...
Updated 08 Dec, 2018

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Captain Maryam Masood and First Officer Shumaila Mazhar are the first women to fly an aircraft via the difficult Islamabad-Gilgit route...but definitely not the first to be subjected to some serious sexism.

The duo took the ATR (PK-605) from Islamabad to Gilgit on Wednesday morning and then flew back (PK-606) safely, a flight the airline shared is "very challenging and requires a lot of precision and technique".

Some passengers pose with the female pilots
Some passengers pose with the female pilots

"Our dynamic duo, Captain Maryam Masood and First Officer Shumaila Mazhar, make it look so easy as they fly through the mountains celebrating the beauty of our northern areas! Way to go!!” PIA said on Twitter.

Obviously, that still wasn't enough for some people to realise that these ladies know what they're doing. Nope, they just had to give their two cents on the matter.

Like this guy who basically blames women for him being jobless...

Yes, we're sure that's what Maryam and Shumaila had in mind while going through years of rigourous training, the end goal was to be copy cats.

Also, though figures are constantly changing, The International Society of Women Airline Pilots says that women account for just 5.18 percent of the pilots at 34 major airlines globally; so tell us again how women entering the workforce are at the root of your unemployment?

This dude would rather WALK to Gilgit from Islamabad and back than be flown by female pilots

Okay then, you do you.

Talk about taking the "women can't drive" stereotype to a whole new level

Translation: Better be careful, planes are very expensive. You family must think a 100 times before even getting you an old Corolla.

It's funny that these women successfully flew to Gilgit and back, which is said to be one of the most testing flights around, and this guy is asking them to be careful.

We've got a case of some selective memory here

Clearly someone's forgotten all the violent accounts in the news that men are responsible for. You know, when two women get into a fight, they rarely resort to murder, stabbing or even a brutal beating.

And this very original joke

This wasn't funny a decade ago, it's not funny now.

I salute both the pilots, no matter what gender. If you earned your wings and you are competent, then why are the men folks jealous.

True picture of Pakistan where people have complete freedom, there is no gender inequality. Women play a great role in Pakistan right from its inception, e.g. the role played by Fatima Ali Jinnah. World should know that Pakistani women are playing a major role in the development of the country.

Bad weather poor visibility and difficult mountainous terrain makes worse scenario for flying an aircraft even by male pilots. ATR crash ex- chitral is still fresh in mind as such they should beter be assigned a compatible flight to operate. However courage shown by female pilots is highly commendable.

It is pathetic really. I read a few comments regarding their dress code and i felt ashamed for being a pakistani and ironically some of them were made by other women.

It's good that women are getting opportunity to prove themselves in such fields. We should encourage them, not discourage them.

The flight route between Gilgit and Islamabad is the most challenging in the world and it is known fact that it takes a great deal of skill to fly this route and these two ladies have successfully proven that they have those skills. My hats off to them.

The gender of the pilots has nothing to do with how they perform. These two women pilots have learned and have experience just like their male counterparts. If they were not qualified, PIA would have never given them the positions they currently have. Instead of praising women for moving ahead, we want to keep them confined within their houses. Public perception needs to change about women in work force if Pakistan has to make real progress.

Some of the negative comments made by those people who forget that without the love and care of our mothers, sisters and wives, we men cannot perform our duties diligently. In our religion, both men and women have the same right to choose whatever career they wish to pursue - there is compulsion in ISLAM.

Good job. When people say.." women job"...then who will decide what is woman's job and what is man's job? Grow up and understand that every individual has the right to decide what he or she could do and will do, not other people.

Very sad and agonizing to read these abhorring comments depicting male chauvinism , we as nation are suffering from. I, for one, having a niece a serving squadron leader in Pakistan Airforce, feel proud of our women making it to the mainstream of these very challenging position of piloting & managing commercial flights, & of our country to have made it possible to happen. Pakistan’s female population, comprising of 60% between 18 to 30 years age, having an edge over its male compatriots, & with lessor opportunities or representation in almost every field of national development needs encouragement & backup so that our nation can come out of cocoon of backwardness. It is very shameful and disgusting of those, suffering from centuries old primitive, traditional, medieval & male dominated outlook advising these outstanding and brave women to stick to their role of being a housewife. I wish them success to become a role model for others enabling us to become a progressive nation.

It's a good move. Good to see women joining this industry as pilots. I worry about safety of passengers and crew, who are still flying by old and faulty PIA ATR planes. I wish all planes have proper maintenance and there is no discrepancy in removing faulty parts.

Thank you for not blurring out their names. The world needs to know and protect their girls from such men! A woman gives birth to such idiots, nourishes them, looks after them and has them "stand on their feet" so that they can go around degrading women in return..! I think some of them don't know that there are women astronauts as well...kher...it didn't change decades ago, it won't change now...even if women walked successfully through fire such "men" would say thora tez nai chalna atta..stunned and in disbelief at the sheer stupidity
