Citizens Archive Pakistan release statement after former employee reveals he was fired

A former staffer claimed that he, along with 12 other employees, were fired from the NGO without any warning.

A former employee at Citizens Archive of Pakistan has revealed that he was fired due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Raza Gilani took to Twitter to share that the non-profit had fired 13 employees, including him, without any prior notice.

"We were told that the organisation won’t pay us until the coronavirus situation dies down, and that we’ll be ‘welcome to apply again’ after that. This is a violation of our rights."

According to Raza, "Our contracts give us the right to have a written termination letter and a month’s notice and salary. But we were fired with immediate effect."

"And this organisation is being run by someone who grabs Oscars for making films about the most vulnerable people of our social order."

He further went on to say that, "We were said that the govt had stopped funding. This is nonsense because the govt only funds one project (National History Museum)."

"If downsizing had become so important, why weren’t the directors and those who actually take a hefty salary fired?

"This is morally and legally corrupt practice: making a profit out of a pandemic. Those who made this decision to save their money should be ashamed of their selves."

He also shared that half an hour after putting the thread up he got a call from HR an that, "All fired employees are receiving emails now. Good that they've acknowledged that. But it's not enough."

The Citizens Archive of Pakistan released a statement today which does not address the former employee's statements but talks about the "unprecedented times" the NGO is in.

According to the statement, "CAP relies on the support and funding of donors both private and public to support its core projects."

They mentioned that they have been struggling for the last several months as they haven't received six months of payments. Also, their existing grants have been put on hold as well.

"Now that the museum is closed for an indefinite period of time due to the government lockdown for COVID-19 pandemic, as a small non-government organization we are finding it difficult to sustain a large workforce and have had to make some difficult decisions to let some members of our organization go whilst also having to revisit current employees' remuneration."

CAP also stated that the terminated employees "will receive their salaries for the month of March 2020 along with an additional month of pay for April 2020 to be paid after their 4 week notice in accordance with their contracts."

The organisation also claims that should they be back on their feet after the pandemic is over, "employees who have been terminated will be the first we contact in regards to a return to their position."

Speaking to Images, CAP added, "CAP is a not for profit organization, it runs on grants and is dependents on donors. The Board of Governors work voluntary for the organization to help raise funds."

Considering the vast spread of Covid-19 across the globe, it is extremely uncertain as to when that may happen.

We understand that firms and organisations can be in a crisis but to suddenly terminate employees without any warning and giving them their notice period two days later post a thread from a former staffer calling them out doesn't seem fair in such dire times.

Citizens Archive also spoke to Images and sent a statement regarding the alllegations.

According to CAP, "13 employees were sent termination letters via email including details of immediate payment of March salaries, followed up with phone calls informing them that more details were to follow. Another letter was sent out informing all will be paid for 1 month notice period in accordance with their contracts. At no point did CAP say that they would not be paid their salaries."

They mentioned, "CAP is a non for profit organization, it runs on grants and is dependents on donors. The Board of Governors work voluntary for the organization to help raise funds."

"Our partner for museum is the Government, and they have not paid us for 6 months. Salaries to all employees for the last several months were dispersed on time, regardless of the inflow to make sure employees lives would not be disrupted. The National History Museum is closed because of Covid-19 and CAP works on Cultural and Historical Preservation which in this global emergency, is not a donor list priority."

They added, "CAP understands these are unprecedented times and drastic decisions had to be made. No one on the Board of Governors is in favor of this action but unfortunately incoming funds directly dictate all such terms especially for a small Non for Profit organization."

Somehow, they forgot to answer how much pay cut for the higher ups. We understand that they have to let go some people but many organizations are also take the blunt by reduced salary for higher income people

Don't really know what these Citizen archive people do. Seems to be quite a waste of time. Still they should get salary as per termination clause in agreement.

So I interned with CAP in 2010, when economic and social conditions were pretty good. But it was an unpaid internship and once I asked to be dropped to from Defence to Tariq road as it was raining, (one paid employee was getting dropped at Tipu Sultan), that the driver had to be answerable for change of route. I commuted from North Karachi. And to this day I think why a non profit being run by such rich people doing very important work had to be so stingy to unpaid interns who were gathering so much data for them. That comment on Oscars is on point. If you are making movies about how the vulnerable need protection, then please start with how you can not make anyone more vulnerable than they already are.

Decision makers care about human rights and employee rights only when they are threatened with consequences.

I had a pleasure of working with CAP on a project. I totally agree with the matter. Oscar or not. You can't change the nature. All glitters are not gold.

Disagree with 'CANNOT FIRE DURING PANDEMIC' sentiments. Government has to step in and help organizations with salary expenses or else many will go bankrupt. Organizations do not have endless reserves of cash. The economy is stagnant and money is not magic. Pressurize govt to step in with help and assistance.

At this time where there is no business or revenue source Employees should not burden employers, So should have some give and take. I thing unpaid leaves are the best solution instead firing. Or government should pay salaries or private sector affect es... Another thing government should pass directive for waiver of rent payment to landlords.. As if there is no income how can a tenant, shopkeeper or business can pay rent.
