Mehwish Hayat's tweets about Karachi airport's washroom are spot on

"Not only is it unhygienic but is this the first impression we want to give to people arriving here?" she wrote.
Updated 26 Jan, 2020

If you've ever taken a flight from Jinnah International Airport and used the washroom, you know what Mehwish Hayat is talking about.

The Load Wedding actor took to Twitter to share how she had the "misfortune of using the ladies room at Karachi airport":

"Disgusting! Dirty and stinking. Even saw cockroaches. Not only is it unhygienic but is this the first impression we want to give to people arriving here?"

Fair point!

She added, "These are the most basic amenities — let's clean up our act."

Many others shared their own experiences under Hayat's tweet:

And the sad state of affairs is not just limited to the washrooms either!

It’s not just airports in general. It’s almost at every public place or mall you’d visit would be the same. As a nation we are not bothered by this because maybe we are accustomed to such hygiene levels now and just don’t care or think it’s below par.

Although the Airport is a federal affair, I would start with blaming the PPP government. As they started this non-merit and non-deserving based employments. Having said that currently the PTI government should be held accountable for any thing that’s wrong with any Airport! It’s a federal matter PTI please solve it, no-excuses!

Thank you, Mehwish for pointing out the most important issue on tourism and hygene. Airports should be very clean in every way. Asking for money by workers should be eliminated. Don't promote tourism if you cant clean the washrooms. Bad for PK.

I just wish that if the government could not fix the economy, creat jobs and control the inflation then they could at least run a campaign on road saftey and cleanliness. You see, airports are mostly used by the privileged people and if these are so dirty then imagine how the normal public places would look like.

Look at what the Pakistani Citizens do on the local streets, throwing stuff outside, no concept of ownership of keeping the city clean, easy to blame the low paid janitors that have to deal with illiterate and unhygienic Pakistani Citizens!!!

Cleaning of toilets at all airports in the country is the responsibility of the sweepers of Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan. It shows the how CAA is managing the toilets of airports which are frequently used by the outgoing and incoming passengers in Pakistan.

Will never forget the experiences of using washrooms at Lahore and Faisalabad airports. First of all, there was standing water all over the floor, stalls were disgusting, and on top of that, there was no toilet paper. Furthermore, people harassing passengers to use the basic airport amenities is a phenomenon that only happens on Pakistani airports.

This $ , € and Riyal is a menace not just restricted to washroom attendants but is in practice with porters as well. They demand payment in these currencies even before they load your baggage onto trollies in International arrivals. As for the hygiene, I have had sightings of cockroaches in men’s toilets in International departures. Disgusting management.

Fully support the celeb's views. Just used the Lahore airport washroom upon return form Indonesia. The washrooms at Jakarta airport were at least as clean as our 5-star hotels. And ours were minus 5-star. Its an attitude problem, Our workers can get away with poor performance because the supervisors don't care; they don't care because no heads roll. With a lifelong GoP employment ( which I too have enjoyed) and a fat pension to follow , there is hardly any incentive to work in the government other than rising to grade 22. I actually complained to Secretary Aviation but he too was very exasperated. Without putting hobs on the line, and ending the lifelong perks, nothing is likely to improve.
