As cases of hate crime against Muslims in India see a sharp rise, especially during the country's election season, Veere Di Wedding actor Swara Bhasker has raised concern at the ill-treatment of minorities in the country.

The Bollywood star issued an apology to Muslims on Twitter, saying "I want to apologise to the Muslims of India & the non-Savarna castes of India & the Muslims of India".

She said she was apologising for the ceaseless offensive bigotry that minorities in India are dealing with this election season.

She also encouraged minorities to stand up for themselves, saying "this is your country, don’t be silenced".

She then went on to say, "as a woman.. what can I say", adding that women deal with bigotry and unfair treatment on a daily basis.

Though many responded to her tweet with similar concern, others were critical of her gesture.

She is known to have a certain ideological slant and is selective in her outrage. But then again, most people have their own biases. And it's better to speak out than remain silent.

Very appreciative of a young lady to speak out. Nations thrive to greatness not by division but only and only with Unity. Populist regimes have never done well for a country in long term, but people typically don’t like to face the truth.

Swara Bhaskar would really enjoy living under a muslim culture society. Wonder how they would have loved her role in "VdiW" that has got her some recognition. Right now she is living in a vibrant society that allows exhibition of personal satisfaction openly. Maybe she should move to the land of pure to show off her art and skills and also experience first hand the treatment of minorities. Swara Bhaskar in a burka, is a good sight to imagine. Hope, she gets the picture.
