Wasim Akram was one of the many recipients of the Hilal-i-Imtiaz on Pakistan Day and, watching the moment, Shaniera Akram felt the proudest she had ever been.

She posted on Instagram a screengrab of Wasim being awarded the civilian award and shared a sweet message for her husband.

"He never really got a retirement but moments like this make it all worth while. Wasim Akram receiving the Hilal-i-Imtiaz for his contribution to Pakistan through his outstanding excellence in sport. What a proud moment," wrote Shaniera.

"You have shown the world that if you work hard and believe in yourself, no matter what background you come from, that you can achieve anything. You are the proof that dreams really do come true. You have made us all so proud in the past and continue to do so today. Congratulations Wasim Akram you deserve it."

The former Pakistan cricket captain retired from the sport in 2003. He was among the 127 people who were bestowed a civil award by President Arif Alvi in honour of their work for Pakistan's betterment.

Wasim Akram is a hero across the world. This was long overdue. A type 2 diabetic, he was told to leave sport by medics. He thought, I will show them. The greatest bowler in history. As stated by Lara, Atherton, Richie Benaud, Gavaskar .

Wasim Akram was a genius with the ball and arguably the best left armer ever seen by the game. However, his off field antics especially the findings of the reports carried out towards the end of his carrier warranted must more consideration before conferring a national recognition. World is a very strange place we live in; payment of 460 billion for the crime done makes the perpetrator a hero and brave person and proven guilty of corruption in sports get national recognition. Interesting; isn't it?
