Raees will not release in Pakistan, says the censor board

Mahira Khan's Bollywood debut will not be screened in Pakistani cinemas due to its content
Updated 07 Feb, 2017

Rumours of Mahira-SRK starrer Raees releasing in Pakistan were ripe this past week, however, as per latest reports, the film will not be releasing here.

Sources within the censor board have said that Mahira Khan's Bollywood debut will not be released in Pakistan.

Sources from the censor board told Images the reason behind it is that "the content undermines Islam, and a specific religious sect, [while also] portraying Muslims as criminals, wanted persons and terrorists."

The decision was made Monday afternoon by the censor board.

Earlier the film was in turbulent waters owing to the sour relations between Pakistan and India. Pakistani artists were banned across the border following the Uri attack in Kashmir. Consequently, Mahira Khan was not able to promote her film Raees in India.

The rift also forced Shah Rukh Khan to commit to Indian right wing political party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) that he will not to work with Pakistani artists in the future.

The Bollywood actor had met with the MNS supremo Raj Thackeray late last year and according to Indian Express the meeting was to confirm that "Mahira Khan is not coming to India for any kind of film promotion and he will also not cast any Pakistani artistes in future.”

It is absolutely untrue that muslims are projected in any improper way in the movie. In fact, the hero, a muslim in the film is taught by his mother that "harming innocent people is unacceptable" and he grows up with that belief. By the way, it is running to full screens in GCC countries with all muslims appreciating it.

Censor board needs to watch it again and again. If taken in the positive spirit and views, in fact it is the opposite. Raised with value, Muslim are projected in a very positive way. Ban is uncalled for and not right. All gulf countries have embraces the movie. SKR is an outstanding actor and a patriot all true, but he is also very sensitive to the sentiments of all religions and faith.

I have seen Pakistani dramas and movies in which Talibans have been shown carrying out blast and human massacre. We are fine with it but we have a problem with an Indian movie. I am not sure what is the rational of the censor board not to release the movie. It is pure politics. It is a great movie and I liked it.

I am against its screening in pakistan but thats for political reasons. The reasons given by the sensor board are rediculous though. Its a rubbish film anyway. Wasted my 3 (or may be 5 if you count the travel) hours on it. Apart from that one song "zalima", there is nothing new in the film. Mahira Khan , the brilliant actress that she is, has been reduced to the level of good for nothing Sunakshi Sinha in Dabang. The film could do even without a heroin altogether and it would not have made any difference whatsoever to the story. She has been wasted to say the least

For God sake guys, this is a movie for entertainment purposes. Why do we want a movie produced in either country to project good or bad image of a particular people. There are good and bad people everywhere, and I don't see any reason to not watch a movie just because it has shown some Muslim guys to be bad characters. Unless we see a series of movies coming out of the same source which presents such stereotypes, we should just relax and not remain on pins and needles all the time.

There is disclaimer in the beginning of the movie itself that it does not represent any caste, religion or ethnic group. Having said that, it is a movie and should be taken in that spirit. It is a critical commentary on the policy of prohibition (ban on alcohol) being followed in the state of Gujarat in India which is also the home of Indian PM Mr Modi. Everything in movies should not be mixed with religion. There are more number of Muslims in India than in Pakistan and nobody protested against this there.
