Karan Johar won't 'engage with talent' from Pakistan, says he respects Indian sentiments

The filmmaker urged people to take into account the 300 Indians who 'put their blood, sweat and tears' into ADHM
18 Oct, 2016

Filmmaker Karan Johar on Tuesday said he had always tried to express his patriotism through his movies. Referring to the controversy that his upcoming movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has been embroiled in, he said the situation in the country had been entirely different when he had shot the film in September-December.

"The climate was completely different, the circumstances were different," Johar said in a video statement, referring the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Pakistan then. "Our government had made efforts to foster peaceful relationships with the neighbouring country, and I respected those efforts then."

The producer further said that he had remained silent amid the growing calls for boycotting Fawad Khan-starrer Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which is slated for release on October 28, and other movies featuring Pakistani actors because of the "deep sense of pain I felt that a few people would believe I am being anti-national". He added that he respected the prevailing sentiments in the country, referring to India's deteriorating relations with Pakistan since the militant attack on the Indian Army camp in Kashmir's Uri sector. "For me my country comes first, nothing else matters to me but my country," Johar said.

"I'd like say that of course, I'll not engage with talent from the neighbouring country given the circumstance, but with same energy I beseech you to know that more than 300 Indians in my crew have put their blood, sweat and tears into Ae Dil Hai Mushkil," the filmmaker said.

Johar's statement comes days after the Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association of India announced that it had asked its members to not screen movies featuring Pakistani, singers or musicians. The ban is applicable to single-screen theatres in the four states of Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Earlier, the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association had banned Pakistani actors and technicians from working on projects in India. On September 23, Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena had said Pakistani actors had 48 hours to leave the country.

finally he says something, He has a right to his statement, totally understandable given the time the countries are in today. I agree India will suffer because its their money at stake. Fawad khan probably has a 10minute role which shouldnt be given that much importance.

Indians fetch far bigger business returns then they pay Pakistani artists in movies, it is just a strategy to get Pakistani audience pay for the low quality sub standard directed movies, you have shot on your own foot by banning Pakistani actors, we appreciate your move and thank you for not selecting any Pakistani in future.

I hope the ban is permanent this time. India does not need Pakistani artists or Pakistani market for its movies. Build your industry & be happy with your actors & movies. Leave Indian movies & Indian actors alone.

Feel pity for these Indian celebrities' showmanship for their survival. It is, now, for the Pakistani actors to rethink for their self-respect in future.

the film producer should think about it before putting his money. If an investor puts his money into Libya, Syria or Zimbabwe- he can't blame others for the losses

Karan Johar is right, other producers & directors should candidly declare that they will not engage Pakistani actors & musicians in indian films. This will surely pose a challenge to Pakistani counterpart to deliver the best in fact much better than the Indian stuff.

In the video if u watch carefully, it's so obvious that Karan is trying to supress his laugh. But this is sad. I believe if we keep interacting through artists & arts, we won't have to deal with each other's soldiers. We share many common things, including language, culture, music etc etc. Why can't we have joint artistic expressions.

@Ajay vikram Singh Ask Modi. He started the problem and wants to cash in next election. Pakistan bashing will give him some votes that is sure. The question is , will he win in UP. The answer is big NO. By and large Indian people do not hate Pakistan knowing Indian position in JK is in contravention of UN resolution. South Indian have nothing to do what North Indian faces. Indian must defeat BJP in next election otherwise Indian will suffer internationally.

So India wont see the film and Pakustan has banned indian content as well....he is really in a bad spot Coming to Fawad....if his own country wont support his film....one certainly should not expect the "enemy" to support...no wonder the last line of support within the "enemy" camp is also crumbling

Both countries appear to be thumping their chests. This leads to nowhere other than to make us look like apes. Is there introspection behind statements being made or actions being taken? There is a rush to scream before the media without regard to what we are saying and the potential damage it may cause to people like Karan Johar, whose movies we have all watched on both sides of the border and enjoyed.

@Irfan Haque Modi has not banned any movie unlike PAK Government. In fact our home minister Rajnath Singh given assurance of full safety to producer association. Problem with PAK people is that they take MNS stand as a position of Modi/Center Government. In a true democracy every one has right to express his voice so Raj Thakery but Center Government never ever banned any PAK artiest other they would not have got Visa in first place. But yes PAK Government has banned all indian movies and indian content.

@Irfan Haque - Listen, India pak problems are 70 years old. When we killed millions of innocents of each -other at the time of partition, there was no Modi. When we fought 3 wars and many small scale military battles with each other, there was no Modi. Dont be obsessive about Modi. We indians dont vote keeping pakistan in mind. We vote for our internal issues . Modi's biggest strength is that he is "not corrupt". We are fed up with corruption in our system, which is the mother of all ills affecting us - like poverty etc. It doesnt matter, whether he is a Hindu or Muslim or Sikh. We want incorruptible leaders, who really want to do for the nation, instead of looting it. Period!
