Coke Studio's credited for bringing our indigenous folk and classical sounds to a mainstream audience, but what do purists think of this musical endeavour?

We asked veteran music critic and first-time Coke Studio listener Asif Noorani to weigh in on some of the Season 9's most hotly debated tracks - Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's 'Afreen Afreen', Abida Parveen and Ali Sethi's 'Aaqa' and Haroon Shahid and Quratulain Baloch's 'Baliye' (that features bits of the classic 'Laung Gawacha').

Most of re-worked versions of folk and other popular songs have been butchered turning them into noise. There is a famous saying "If it works, don't fix it"

Afreen Afreen would a treat. Momina sings from the heart was the best way to describe her performance. Rahat Saahib is a living legent, but it was her sweet melodious voice which captivated me.

I am 66 and like Coke Studio fusion with classic old songs . Not all their songs are a hit but overall it is a very good effort to appeal to a new global generation . Good job Coke ....only if you could brighten up your stage.

Aey Rahay Haq Kay Shaheedo, Afrin Afrin and Mun Kunto Maula have been really good (specially the first one, amazing job with one of the most intense patriotic songs with great poetry to boot). Great job coke studios. Others not too keen on but perhaps I need to listen to the other tracks a few more times. Coke Studios music has a tendency to grow on you over time.
